Megaprojects are more interesting when you don't cheat. Just my 2 cents.

I'm much more impressed with someone's tower that they built in survival with stone they mined themselves and ore they smelted, rather than some guy who imported the blueprint for the USS enterprise and said "Hey look what I made!" or threw down infinite stone in creative mode.
Yeah, but it's not just one guy spending his free after noons, its a bunch of poorly orgainized jerks on the internet who don't know each other placing fake blocks in a video game over the weekend, so it doesn't really work when 10+ people are mining the whole continent apart, reaping the natural resources in the kind of orgy of manipulation and abusing the earth that the industrial revulotion could have only wished it was.
what was I talking about?
You don't need to rape the landscape for very much nowadays. Wool grows back on sheep, and the sheep can be dyed beforehand for different colors. Cobble can be made in infinite quantities. Trees can be grown, and wood can be burned for charcoal (for turning cobble into stone). Iron golems respawn and can be killed for iron ingots. Zombie pigmen drop gold nuggets, which can be turned into gold ingots. About the only non-renewable resources are diamond, obsidian, and redstone.

Yeah but by doing it yourselves in survival you make it so much more interesting. One guy makes a sheep farm, another guy works the furnace, several more mine and mine.... all resources go to the project, there is no self. DWARF FORTRESS COMMUNISM

Obsidian is easy- just go to the nether.

If you want to do this with no mods, you can use Planehacked.

I demand Microcline trinkets!

Seriously, though. If we got a brand new survival server together for Bay12, I might actually play Minecraft some more.

@sirus Thats the slow, undwarfy way.

I would like a survival server with my dwarfy buddies.
But for spending a weekend making something awesome, creative would be idle.
However, a 24 hour dwarf server would not be devoid of megaprojects, I'm just saying if we want a quick and snappy, week end event creative is the best option.

nether.

when was water placeable in the nether? I must have missed that update.
Pretty sure he means getting buckets of lava from the nether, not bringing water to the nether.

If we are doing a big project with a lot of people and its going to be survival then I won't be helping with the building. I could possibly record it and I already do Minecraft videos on my channel and all so that would be fine. Its just that when I talk big I mean in a sense that would rape the country side. I have been planning a build of my own and its base is over a hundred blocks wide with walls 3 thick. One of the bottom layers (A layer equaling one block thick slice) alone takes up 2604 blocks and that is just the walls themselves and I plan for the bottom part to be at least 10 blocks high. Maybe we just have different ideas of big. I plan to use the full height now available to me. If instead you mean something smaller and less resource intensive I could help.
Oh and like Devling says, creative is quicker. If we want something truly big and not just a small town then its the only way to go. You have to remember part of a timelapse is that someone is recording it and unless you want to be the one dealing with the absolutely massive file that results from a really long session we need to keep the time down.

Obsidian from the Nether:  Fill your inventory with buckets, take a big chunk out of a lava lake, come back and dump off 40 lava springs into dirt molds, harden with water on the real-world side.  Easy enough.

I don't mind Easy, but Peaceful feels too wimpy.  Besides, Peaceful also means you're missing some loot.

*Sigh*
You don't seem to want a timelapse, you want a survival game that is record.

Peaceful? PEACEFUL?! Well sure, if you don't want zombie meat (feed it to your pet wolf), bones (turn into bone meal for dyes or making trees grow instantly), gunpowder (for TNT), iron tools and weapons (to save precious iron bars), string (for bows and fishing lines), and so on.

Folks.
Megaproject timelapses are not interesting when you're mining all the freaking time.
Creative mode for those.
(Unless it's a screenshot-a-day timelapse, in which case... maybe.)

What TolyK said, We are doing a timelapse, not a survival build. You want to build in survival we have a vanilla survival server already, go there build and take pictures of your progress. This is supposed to be a quick build process where we have a design in mind and just build it while someone records it.

Alright alright.  Creative it is.  What's the theme, and who wants to work up a basic design?  I'll take part for a few hours.

The answer is obvious: We build a giant toad. With magma pouring out of it's mouth.
