And then they'd have to understand not to step on the pressure plate when there are zombies outside.

And if buttons, they'd have to understand when to and when not to press buttons.

Seems easier to copy NPC aggro code, give it to iron golem and switch the target so it chases hostile NPCs

   Also, your all looking at this from the view of just protecting the villagers. I would like to put forward that IGs are not only good for the villagers but for the players as well. Also who out there doesn't think the IGs are awesome? I was willing to accept them the moment I realized I was able to protect a servers spawn area with them or say your house but then they without having anything much became a hundred times more fleshed out then the villagers themselves with the simple addition of making the occasionally drop a flower.
   Another thing is your assuming the villagers built the IGs themselves. Have you ever seen the villagers build one? No they just appear so I would like to put forward that in the past the villagers where once a powerful empire but it [crumbled/sank beneath the waves/was destroyed by gods wrath] and now the only remnants are the IGs that their ancestors built that appear in their villages to protect them and thus following age old programming.
