one world i genned had a speck of land "floating" on top of a swamp biome.
it wasn't more than 20-23 blocks.

on another note, i've gotten damn lucky.
spawned with:
big village, big EMPTY INSIDE cave, (i'm building a complex like the one of batman)
swamp, desert and forest biome forming a triangle.
clay everywhere.

who wants da seed and da coordinates?

They can't even say 'its beta' any more. :D

Anyway I tried it out in multiplayer, promptly crashed. Tried again, fell through the world. Tried a third time and died to a creeper. One of those three is an acceptable thing, but I was annoyed enough to stop playing for now. I will wait.

coords of empty cave complex inside big mountain=

z:679.81
f:3
village is nearby as is the forest biome and the swamp biome (they are on opposite sides of village) clay is in the lake in the mountain (there is also a chasm near by)
climb the smallest hill on the coordinates of  227 y 75 and z 696, f:0 you should see the start of the desert biome right in front. have fun!

I think it's safe to assume that Minecraft uses the terms 'Alpha' and 'Beta' rather loosely.  According to the definitions on the Wikipedia page it just left Alpha and entered a sort of open Beta stage.
