My Cathedral of Blood, dedicated to Armok, built at around z-level 30 deep underground, on a survival multiplayer server. All materials were gathered normally (The glowstone was the hardest), as well as the entire space being carved from solid rock/gravel/dirt, which took HOURS upon HOURS, since I did it alone. Tens of thousands of blocks.. I forgot the exact dimensions, but its massive.
Sadly, its not finished, although the part shown IS. Behind/below where I'm standing in the screenshot (on a ledge), was to be the main alter, and directly behind where I'm standing, behind what was to be a large glass window, was the priest/high priest's quarters. Neither the alter or the quarters were finished, although they were 70% dug out.
Sadly, the server it was on closed down, so all I have left of it is this screenshot and one of it being half-decorated.
The altar was going to have large amounts of gold and iron blocks, glowstone, and of course, magma-fountains. The Door you see on the far side of the original picture was controlled by a server-addon that used iron blocks to control the disappearing of blocks. They removed the feature for non-admins when pistons came out, which made my door completely useless (pissed me off to no end).
I had also planned on making a redstone contraption to allow the sacrificing of people stupid enough to pull the lever near the alter, but that wasn't finished.
Whatcha guys think? This was entirely done using survival mode, and just shows how little of a life I have past DF, Minecraft, and college.
My very poor approximation has come up with 90,000.
and eight hours of digging through stone. At three stone per second.
and 57 diamond picks.
Some food for thought: do strength potions work on snow golems?
Took more like 3 months on and off
3 stone a second? Thats some fast mining lol.
Now, my great hall, where my four tunnels intersect, took about 8-9 hours of continuous digging (no breaks here) to get the main part excavated. However, its no where near as big as the Cathedral, as I built it a longtime before hand.
Later on (not long before I did the cathedral), I came back to this hall and re-did the ceiling, as it was extremely bland. Also by then I got a shiny new texture pack.. which made cobblestone so much nicer to look at:
Those two areas (the Cathedral and Great Hall) were the only two things I made there that were really spectactular, in my opinion. Everything else wasn't all that polished, and even the updated Great Hall had things I needed to fix still.
The four tunnels I mentioned were as follows: North lead to the northern exit, situated in a valley between two steep mountains (This was BEFORE the new biomes). Very beautiful terrain, and the entrance used a large amount of mossy cobblestone as well as two pairs of iron doors controlled by a lever, that one of the moderators did for me with redstone.
The southern tunnel was by far the longest, going waaaay south under the "Ocean" (not much of an ocean though), and then proceeding west a bit to a mountain which it came out of. I built a crappy looking dwarf-face out of the mountain with lava flowing out of it's mouth.
Eastern tunnel wasn't worked on much, so nothing there.
Western tunnel lead directly to the Cathedral. Beyond that, not on the four tunnels, I had various other areas leading to workshops and the mines.
I loved that fortress, although I was looking to start new.. but I had figured we were going to wipe the server and start fresh, not close it down alltogether. I was sad aboot that.
