How do the redstone engines work? I've placed them but they have no interface and when I give them a redstone current they don't do anything. Are they limited in what they can run? Are they unable to run a pump, for example?

You've gotta stick them next to a pipe I think. Such as a wood pipe, they will be on their side if they're gonna do anything

As long as it has current and is pointed at something that needs an engine, it should run.  Redstone engines might not be able to power a pump alone.  They aren't very powerful, so anything more than a wooden/obsidian pipe is probably too much for them.

Things like pumps and quarries don't need pumps on the wooden pipe leading out, just on themselves.

Is there a reliable way to find slimes in Survival mode? I've made some fairly extensive deep mines, but have yet to have any show up. Which means the stuff I want to do with sticky pistons is impossible right now. Very annoying.

I think there is an out of game tool you can use to find slime spawning chunks.  Other than that it's pure luck.

Ah alright, maybe I'd need 2-3 of them to run a pump. I was trying to pump oil up into a tank for storage because it was really far down and inconvenient for bucket retrieval. When I gave the redstone engine a current and it was attached to the pump, nothing happened. I'll try using several next time.

I shall try that. I can never find enough oil...

Is there any easier way to find the stuff? I don't want to spend every minute looking for oil to power the machines I've already built.

Maybe once IC is updated for 1.8+ some kind soul will make IC fuel work for buildcraft engines.

The Rei's Minimap mod has an option to show slime chunks.  I've never toggled it on, so I don't know how it works, but that's an in-game tool so it's more convenient than task switching.  Also the maps are decent.

ICē released for 1.8.1 this morning.  Finally for SMP too.  I haven't tried it yet.

I would say dig a 3x3 tunnel system just above bedrock, and when you find a slime, mark the area and dig out more of it. More slimes should spawn there since they spawn in certian chunks.

Put in Seed, put in your coordinates, and a distance and hit Search.

Didn't know they only spawned in certain chunks. That'll be useful.

Also, for vanilla MC the seed "Brimstone" starts you off in a pine forest next to a magma pool and a large pond. Pretty decent starting area, with some rich caverns underneath.
