Sorry to break from what you guys are talking about, but the main problem I've had with 1.8 (.1) is that due to the hunger system, I can't make a permanent home, I have to go full hunter just to survive day after day.  I can't build a home, expand the settlement, have a family dig for minerals, get diamonds, or anything. 

And I don't like taking bread from the NPC villages, it seems like stealing.  And I don't have the 1.9 pre-release. 

Any tips?

You could start with first few days on peaceful, when you then have gotten bold enough to crank up the difficulty then do that.

I was there, I had A Diamond...
Then Zombies...
It was dark...
Forgot to place torches...
Regardless.. TOO EASY NOW TO GET TO THE LEVELS FOR DIAMONDS...

And easy to die as you just shown.
Your problem?

Oh I had it on Hard mode, and wasn't paying attention...
IF I hadn't bothered with chasing down 15+ cows, collected 3-4 64 stacks of Coal, 2-3 64 stacks of Iron Ore and 1 stack of Redstone/Gold. I would have found it sooner...

You try it, Pattern is...

Cut 3 logs, make Bench, pick and Axe, use axe to cut 10 logs.
Use Pick to cut 3 stone.
Make stone Pick.
Find Ravine/Hole. Decend to level 20. Cut down to level 11... Boom. Instant arrival. The Ravine/Hole gives quick access to Iron to make the Iron Pick, and Also makes it quick to get down there...

Remind me, Do you take damage if a boat falls a great distance while your in it and fall off say a cliff???

My minecraft is leaking memory. A lot of it. I can't play for more than 5 minutes straight. I already tried reinstalling, forcing update, running the jar allocating more memory to the vm... any thoughts?

Try to install Java 64 bits. This solves my problem with the "Not enough memory" I was encountering with MC at max (fog at the max distance) on my new laptop.

That seems to have fixed my problem, at least my game hasn't crashed since I installed the 64 bit java. Thanks!

Try something else, how easy is it to reach Nether?

Find 4 Iron Ore, 1 Flint. Descend down a Ravine/Hole to lava. Make bucket. Shape with Cobblestone the base of a portal, collect Lava, place, collect water, Cast Obsidian, continue until Portal is complete, make Flint and Steel...

The fact that you could find the Four Iron and plenty of Gravel to grind until you get flint isn't funny. Its what. 14 Obsidan, heck you can make a portal that is only 10 and it still works. The amount of times that I have found a Ravine with water flowing down to the bottom and a lava pool at the bottom being casted naturally is too much to count...

Farming takes way too long, unless I have bonemeal, and I don't actually know how to farm melons. 

It would make for an interesting diet, though. 

Ironically, the world which I'd named "Nomadcraft" just happened to be the world where I managed to find a spot with lots of stone, wood, some coal, and some spawning animals.  So yeah, I built a permanent home there, I hope the creepers don't find me.

melons are great. just wheat works fine too.

Also... don't animals respawn? why do you have to go full hunter?

furthermore, in 2 days of travelling to find a place for the new home, I gathered enough food for weeks! ( minecraft days, minecraft weeks)

Yeah, animals respawn, but sometimes, I go for Minecraft hours without a single animal, which is where I start getting worried. 

Also, animals don't seem to respawn on islands, like the Urist Island.
