Well, it's generally considered the the sun rises and sets in the right places (east and west) and the clouds travel north. But I think if you think of minecraft like the standard compass directions, the top of maps still face east...[Citation Needed]
The wiki says that Jeb and Notch have said that in the minecraft world the sun rises in the North

The world of Minecraft is weird enough that the term of 'North' is completely arbitrary. There is no magnetic influence except for the quantum entanglement of players to the world spawn point. North only means here "Where the sun rises".

Although I do support any chance Notch has to make the world more fantastical, even going so far as to defend Void Fog.

Also don't forget that compasses, which are spos to point towards the north magnetic pull. Point at a random area on the ground or a bed...

Still this mod...
http://www.millenaire.org/
Uses the North is Sunrise as its cardinal.
And the Minimap Mod
http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/91544-181sep-15-lahwrans-mods-zanminimap-for-18/
Uses Sun rises from East.
So when I press V which does a 2km search ofr a NPC village due to the Milllenaire Mod. And if it says South. It means West. And so forth. Confusing if I ain't paying attention...

What are nice NPC/Human mods that synergize well with Painterly Pack? Kinda lazy at the moment to mod millenaire to match Painterly's textures and GUI.

What's the N@W server like? Also, why haven't I ever seen any underground constructions from it?
Because they're hidden :P
Also:
Because those tend to be hidden, and all the good ones weren't made by us.
Well, we do have a secret base pretty far away...  :-X

I know of a great underground structure, but I am not sure if it is public, so I won't post any picture.
Wall?

If you think we need more underground things... join us and dig!
Even if you don't, JOIN US AND DIG!

The map is great, you can see both the wiki and the youtube trailer to have some examples of it. It is also quite big, it takes several minecraft days to go from one end to the other. There are also some ruins, orc camps ( reskinned pigmen) and probably many other hidden features not discovered yet.
Also, huge biomes. Huuge. Biomes.

Unluckily, server population is not quite high as the server deserves now, but that is something that will be fixed after we get updated to 1.8, when public applications reopen. Meanwhile, you can still get referred if you want.
Just PM us your app and one of us can post it for you.

Yeah, I probably will join. I'll write up the application later though.

Those of you sticking to 1.8 so far: Try out 'Bears!' as a seed. You start out immediately next to a chasm, in a swamp next to an ocean, and the chasm continues out underwater (i.e. as a crack into the seabed) and leads to caves, an abandoned mine and gets down to magma level.

So I had this mode called NatureOverhaul. So far so good, messed around with a couple of the choices you could make. Seemed to have stufed up the Millenaire mod's Village Groves by using it, but its all good, I can cut down whole trees with just cutting down the bottom log with it (but it takes the endurance as if you cut them all).

So I clicked onto the Animal Birth rate, to Insane...
Crest a hill while going on my woodchopping run and see this...

1.9 prerelease 2 will apparently have breeding.
