With 1.8, I can no longer even run Minecraft in browser, due to the bad video card driver error. Now my mining and crafting will have to be done on another computer, at least until I get a better graphics card because honestly Intel 82915G/910GL sucks so much. :'(

Before someone suggests to update my drivers, I have. It's the new warm light thing, I'm telling you.

I don't know why, but 1.8 runs better than 1.7.3 on my computer~
On an unrelated note, I built one of those cute mushroom houses, but then I ran off to find sheep, and now I'm lost in the swamp biome I spawned in~
At least it is, indeed, the same biome, but I wanna go home~ :<

1. Build a dirt tower.
2. See if you can spot your mushroom from there.
3. Remove tower and move to a different location.
4. Repeat until you find it.

Well, that might work, unless the trees cover your mushroom.

I find my answer to that problem in minecraft is just build a new house where I am. Eventually you will either be able to remember where your house is or you will have so many all over the place that you can't help but find one when walking in a straight line.

I always build a few cobble towers in the area with torches, a couple of cobble towers on top of a few trees too. I also tend to build my homes in the side of a hill or cliff, so I look on the sides of hills.

Whenever possible (provided you allow this), swap to creative mode and get yourself a map. At least start the map from the house you intend to have as a home base. That aside, it doesn't hurt to place a tall flag illuminated with at least a torch or 2. Furthermore, it doesn't hurt to make posts once in awhile pointing in the direction towards a key location.

At least, that's what I do. Map is more a survey tool to use.

Well, regardless, I managed to find my way back~
Turns out the swampy biome is something of a lagoon with my little mushroom forest on one side and a village on the other~
I ran around the whole thing and didn't find the sheep I was looking for, but hey, neat little lagoon thingy and village~
Generally, I keep tabs of locations by placing 'roads' of torches until I can build an actual road or rail track~
But dammit, I don't usually have to go this far to find some wool~

Is iron more common in 1.8? I found 24 iron ore blocks in about 10 minutes from the first spawn without digging. In previous version I had to dig a lot of levels and for a lot of time to find it (and not so much).

Well, I can tell you it's not as essential now that you can find abandoned mines with rails in them... that was one of the things that would eat up all my iron.

There was tons of coal, loads of iron and lots of gold in the Lyonfort mines. So I guess the rarities might have changed.

I found ~5 stacks of coal, 1 1/2 stacks of iron and some 10 gold from a single cave, ravine and mine put together. I think ores are more common now.
