Huh. Mine in 1.8 is very different. Started me off near a swamp and a pine forest. My actual starting spot was near a field full of long grass. Good place to start a farm, really. Looks like some impressive mountains in the distance, though.

Urist in 1.8 makes aGIGANTIC OCEAN. It spawns you on an island with one tree. Then ocean is around you for miles. one side was 2000 blocks to a big land mass

 It will be great when somebody eventually finds a seed to a decently-sized island around the size of the old N@W islands surrounded by seemingly endless ocean. Sometimes narrowing the scope is a good thing.

Oh man, am I the only one who obessively digs out the wood from the mineshafts?

I don't really need it, just, it's so damn claustrophobic and dangerous to have those support-beams.

Also, my third tunnel down was into a skele-spawner connected to a mineshaft that lead eventually into a big chasm.

Lots of chasms, my spawn is jam-packed with trees and hills and has two exposed lavapits within walking distance.

I understand your reasoning, but I enjoy the fact that you consider support beams in a mine tunnel dangerous and you obsessively remove them.

I was pretty much resigned to starvation until I found it. I hope I can find a way up. The seed is Urist, and it's in the mineshaft on one of the closer mini-archipelagos  with a tree on the on the last island.

The crashing, choppyness, and unusable furnaces still make this unplayable for me.

 Reportedly an error comes up if you load in the items before the fuel or the other way around. Would explain why some people crash all the time and others don't, different smelting habits.
