That sucks but...eh. I'm used to waiting for updates on games. I'd rather have a longer wait and a better release then a rushed or buggy release.

You usually need to load new chunks to see most new content. I'll probably just gen a new world anyway.

Depends on the feature. Endermen, new food system and other general stuff should work in old world. New terrain generation of rivers, biomes and villages would probably just mesh incorrectly with your old world but generate fine.

 Although with talks of a new cube based chunk system old works might not be compatible. We will just have to wait and see unless Notch tweeted about this.

Notch has pretty much stated that that will not happen, for reasons that are complete and utter bullshit.
There's always the Cubic Chunks mod, though.
