They do spawn, but Notch being the fail that he is switched the y and z vars on where they could spawn.

 There was one release where they kinda...broke. I remember fun SMP days of digging out a bedrock canal to quickly get places when suddenly UPDATE SLIMES EVERYWHERE OH GOD.

Hmm, a Squad Automatic Weapon style trap made with lava? That sounds awesome, although sounds hard to do... 

Serious though, I see problems on that kind trap. Unless you make your trap with Adminium, protects the blocks from being built or destroyed on that chunk, or at least build it with thick obsidian walls (if the trap is not TOO slow), it's not really hard to simply mine your way out of it.

I've had slimes spawn in one of my maps recently.  I mined out a room at bedrock level and down below bedrock into every nook I could get to.  My plan was to fill it with lava and cover it with glass.  I skipped the lava part because slimes were spawning.

Slimes with dokucraft texture pack are happy. I thought they were friendly, then they killed me.

Yes. Dogs are off limits

If the dog is trapped in a position where the player can see it happen, it should be kosher.  If they can't see it though, the dog's soul is lost and it will haunt the trap for eternity.

You could do that previously provided the boat was a) standing still and b) in contact with the shore, as far as I know.
