RPwise it's actually a very smart move to establish a colony in an area rich in resources we lack.

I could see doing it if we wanted to have Elfs, U-mans, and Dorfs. But I think most people are cool with being a Dwarven empire.

it's all virtual, iConomy is a Bukkit plugin, they are using it for virtual cash (but not gold ingots etc. because those are too easy to lose/whatever)

No.  Real life currency to play is.  Since it's not using real life currency, I fall back on the zero interest aspect in joining.  The PVP is mainly what makes me not wanting to play it.  It was a bit interesting in that I might have been able to participate without having to involve myself in fighting with others, but my recent attention span to games tells me I wouldn't be able to put in the time required to be any worthiness to "the cause."
