Or, y'know, either way it doesn't matter, because maps in the Nether are FUCKING USELESS either way, because compasses are also FUCKING USELESS in the Nether.
Don't know about that. You could still tell north simply by virtue of moving around and seeing where your (spinning) arrow moved.

what's this about solid bedrock ceilings in the nether?

hy would it be solid, and not scattered like the ones on the bottom?

Because it's a solid roof with scattered below.
Just like the ones on the bottom are a solid FLOOR with scattered above.
(Pretty sure he "fixed" the holes in the bottom layer, at least...  I could be wrong about that, but the Nether ceiling is definitely solid bedrock, and the Nether map is definitely randomized orange/grey pixels)
In other news, wikis lie.  Quite often, in fact.
(Wait, that's news?  To who?)

Except...

Also, compasses point to spawn, not north. You have no spawn in the Nether.

Actually, I like to think that spawn is the magnetic north of worlds.

That brings up several implications about the world and how its magnetism works. Hell, magnetism could plain not exist and redstone is just drawn to 0,0 coordinates.

Clocks don't work in the Nether. Forget magnetism, the Nether throws time itself into question. Or at least the ability of restone dust to tell time.

Well, should you take the time to build a nice digital redstone clock in the nether, that'd work.

Ah, but the nether's timeframe is supposedly different from our time frame. It wouldn't work.

Who's to say it even has time as we think of it?
(Don't you come out of a portal at the same time you went in, no matter how long you were in there?)
EDIT: Of course not counting multiplayer Nether.  In that case, the time in the overworld progresses normally (in areas where other players are) while you're down there.

For all we know a million years passes on the Overworld every time you enter the Nether. There's nothing to measure time by.

No, redstone mechanicsms, forges, crops, trees... they all freeze while you're gone.
