Speaking of promising horizons...

I'm liking how more people are making things that are relatively simple additions but improve the game so much. Working mechanical power, intuitive dispensers, pressure plates that work like we'd always hoped, item sensors, zeppelins, the list goes on and on.

 A lot of them are odd though, with weird balance ideas and questionable use with vanilla content.

 Like the train mod, you can't connect cars, so there really isn't much a point to the various cars available. And a bunch of components only used in this mod. I know every mod has some amount of that but it's still an aspect that miffs me.

I was thinking of doing something that just adds a more complete range of building material by dying smooth stone, cobble, and wood.
Easy to implement and would add a lot of variety.

Anyway, went with smooth slabs under it and it looks really, really nice.
I get the contrast of smooth on cobble along with the natural-looking steps.
I'll snag a screenshot when it's not nighttime.

I believe somebody made a block dying mod where it uses the metadata wool uses to color any block. I dunno if it updated and where it is, but it's out there. Hopefully you can do a better job at it yourself.

 They also had a mod where the deeper you were the darker blocks got, so a lot of things you can do with the block metadata stuff already in the program.
