Is there a mod that reduces the world size, and drastically increases the world height? I wouldn't mind giving up a few diameters of the earth to be able to build the most awesome mineshaft ever, or open up room for mods/patches for landing on the moon.

Nope. Closest there is is one that sacrifices underground for aboveground or vice versa.

I want to get a HD texture pack, but am afraid that with 1.6 coming out it's going to be ruined when I update... What do you guys do about this?

Just do it. If MC gets updated you can just remove the pack, so you can use it while it's still 1.5.

I'm working on finding diamond so I can get to the Nether. I already have a lava source in my super cave, which, due to a torch place ment error, had creepers and shit every where, and I need a bow and some arrows before I go back.

Basically? Dig for diamonds between layers 10 and 16. The lower limit is where magma is present; the upper limit is where diamonds start getting rare.

Okay, is the magma sea one big thing like it is in DF or is that level just where the flows start to appear? because I found a magma flow that was surrounded by coal.

Its more like hundreds of thousands of small magma rivers and magma lakes, not one collective mass. So yeah, you probably were looking at it.

I found a huge magma lake too, so that may be part of it. At least I have a marker now, although there probably aren't any diamonds in this massive...massive cavern. I used about six hundred torches so far, and I'm not even sure if I'm halfway done.

I watched a keirshar video a while back that said the way to go for mining diamonds was to get eye level at 12, and dig a branch mine, so that lava doesn't get you, but you still see a good 4 blocks of possible diamonds.

Only barely. Mostly it draws on a game called Infiniminer for inspiration, which actually fell by the wayside as MC took off.

Yes, above layer 16 they have a rate of approximately 0 per cubic kilometer.

Thexor had it right.  Diamond ore blocks start getting rare above layer 16.  They can still be placed up to about 20, though.

Hint: Take a bucket of water, and place a water source so that water is moving over the obsidian block you're digging.
