Jesus christ, someone reported a post just because it said that mac sucks?? Wow, just wow.

No, someone reported a post for being a damn OS war, which is the A-1 way to look like a child on the Internet.

By crashing to black screen, do you mean that your monitor goes blank? Does it crash upon generating a new world?

Have you pulled up task manager and checked out the performance tab when MC is loading up to rule everything else out?
Updated to latest graphics drivers?

I can do everything normally, but after playing for several minutes (as little as one, maybe as much as half an hour), the Minecraft window will just go black and the program will count as Unresponsive, and will never recover.  For a while, I thought it was a graphics issue, because I noticed by GPU fan wasn't turning on, but doing that manually changed nothing.

Like I said, Minecraft ran fine with this exact same computer for a couple weeks, then one day it just didn't anymore.  No change in hardware or settings or graphics or drivers, just random blackscreens.

I've opened my first portal to the Nether. Those noises. Is it possible to deactivate the portal?
Yeah, just break on of the blocks.
I think you can also light it on fire again to shut it down.

EDIT: Was wrong, it can be turned off using an explosion though.

I like the new weather system, especially how it changes when you head inside.

Have you tried playing in browser rather than using the client? Seems quite mysterious. You'd think that if it were overheating, you'd be getting BSODs too. Anything weird happening whilst playing anything other than minecraft?

Also consider that it might just be coincidence that your RAM decided to bugger up after the 1.4 update, it could still be various hardware problems. Though if you haven't had problems with anything else, I don't imagine that it'd be a hardware issue.

Actually i have the same problem, but it only happens on weirder maps like Glacier or Gargamel that have lots of strange features, and mostly on the day>night>day transitions, i think it might be because of the lightning calculations that increase at those points the game exceeds it's allocated memory and crashes

Yea, it does sound like something to do with memory? Have you tried increasing your page file/virtual memory size?

I have the same problem with crashes and blackscreens. IT seems only to crash when it hogs up to around 1 GB of RAM.

Aqi, I had the same problem. Black screens after random amounts of time, changing fog didn't help, etc.  What graphic card are you using? I actually had to get a entire new computer for mine to work.

A GeForce GTX 460.  But that's the thing, I got the computer about a month ago, and Minecraft ran fine for hours.  It was just with the last-ish v.1.4 that it started crashing to blackscreen, and it's been happening faster with each new version.

I suppose I ought to actually go the Minecraft forum about it.

Happened to me, worked for weeks with no issue, then I patched something and it all went downhill. Ill have to go and find my old computer to see what card it has, Ill report back to you when I find out if its a GeForce or not.

The forums didn't help one bit, no one actually said anything useful.

i had this right up until i turned draw distance down from the highest setting.
i would suggest keep lowering it until it doesnt crash. [it may only need to be lowered once.. i think the max draw distance is a bit too far for most 32-bit memory computers..]

Just a heads up, the latest update seems to do that for no damn reason.

I have/use 64-bit memory.

Yeah, the game definitely needs more than 2 GB of RAM for far view.

The thing is I've got 8GB of RAM, normally about 5 free but minecraft still blackscreens at ~800MB. It does it whatever mode I'm on. It's almost definatley my graphics.

Yeah, there are quite a few seeds that make some very interesting starting areas.  'Glacier' is my favorite at this time, but I also like 'Gargamel' (sp?) and even 'Andir' for it's trio of mountains right near spawn with a relatively flat valley between them all (also, I'm bias.)
