Found my way out of it, albeit on peaceful; but if you're determined, it can be done on other difficulties.

From the spawner, go left, not right (right leads deeper into the pits), and grab some soil to setup a barrier between you and the spiders (kill the starting spider, and get as much soil as you can). There should be a notch in the wall. Punch through the stone in that direction, and within 4-6 tiles, you should come across sandstone, punch above the first sandstone block, and you'll be flooded with sand, dig out and you'll see light for the very first time.

Burned my eyes when it happened. This place is shallower than you think, and the scenery outside isn't half-bad. Starting spot is under a dune next to a desert, grassland is just nearby, and also a forest.

Spider aside, this is actually a good place. I do wonder how some people find these places. RNGs and then use what's given?

I dug straight up... died a few times doing it, but there's two tiles of sandstone that once destroyed let light flood in.

Basically what you said. After looking on the Minecraft forums, I found that it was randomly generated by someone. Really amazing.
Probably one of the weirdest absolute spawns, equal to gargamel.

To answer your first question, it probably has something to do with this. Don't want those account thieves changing people's e-mail addresses, because then recovery of said account becomes basically impossible.

To answer your second question: I dunno. It depends on how Notch handles this (which, in turn, depends on how he can handle this!). Maybe he'll ask everyone to reset their passwords, or something. If we assume that password changing is, in fact, disabled because of mods compromising accounts, then it'll probably be reverted once the mod API comes out with the sandboxing option. (Which hopefully won't take as long as I'm guessing it will...  )

But I might be wrong - maybe it's just a database issue and it'll be re-enabled tomorrow!
