These slimes were glitched. They wouldn't die and their larger versions wouldn't do damage at all. They just made a lot of noise, nearly pushed my friend into lava, and cause a lot of lag. I actually left to find a server mod that got rid of them.

Also, RE: all the stuff about Notch - If he put in deep, easy-to-use mod support and then abandoned development of the game, I wouldn't complain a bit.

Several more hours of digging later, and my previous castle has been upgraded with a massive tiered structure going deeeeeep underground. 11 tiers at precisely 4 blocks high , 2 blocks wide per tier, with a 12th half tier 1 wide at the bottom. That bridge to the gateway entrance was at ground level when I started. :D All in all, I now have over 25,000 stone stored in chests from all this; several hundred iron was used for pickaxes.
