Well, he is changing servers, so that's probably what the update was.
It explains the lack of version number change.

Twitter and Tumblr don't mention a new patch, so it's probably just a glitch while the new servers are being implemented.

Looks like they're finally moving to a sufficient solution, with a new launcher and Amazon cloud servers and so on.

So, I decided to dig down from my First Night Shack in the simple 2x2 staircase loop and hit diamond. No lava, just five diamond ore centered on my staircase. Awesome.

Yeuch. I hate LOVE's graphics. It looks fine still, but it's impossible to decipher when you're playing.

And be sure to use a metal pick on those...

My understanding is that Steenberg is going to help out with technical issues, not art issues.  Rendering optimizations, workarounds for graphics card bugs and quirks, etc.

Art is mostly resolved with the recently added support for graphics packs.  Now Notch just needs to make it support textures other than 16x16, so that mcpatcher is no longer needed to use Scribblecraft.

Hadn't thought of using speed hacks in Minecraft until I saw that. Apparently Minecraft keeps time separately and compares it to the system time to prevent normal speed hacks. I just tested a normal speed hack and after a few seconds I slowed to a crawl. I guess the effect in this video could be accomplished the same by using a speed hack to slow the game down while you're idling then return it to normal speed when you're actually playing.
