Well, you can only find Diamonds down near the bottom of the world. Redstone and gold are down pretty far too.

Iron and coal show up a lot higher. So it depends on what you're after. You can get a lot of everything just by doing extensive mining down in the depths. If you really need to find lots of iron, though, you may want to do some extensive mining closer to sea level. Say, 5-10 levels down. Good if you want to do a large mine cart system, for example.

Not sure what you're asking, but since the Halloween update, the deeper you go the brighter conditions monsters can spawn in, so bring a lot of torches either way.

Notch took this out because it wasn't fun.

I do like the idea of torches getting dimmer as you go down, though.

Anyone else excited about SMP health?

I don't think the torches go dimmer. The monsters just need less dark to spawn/can spawn with more light.
I hope SMP health doesn't result in horrible grief-fests. Even if the perpetrators get banned, it'd be pretty annoying in the middle of a construction. On the other hand, awesome  8).

Ah, good. I didn't particularly mind the effort of putting up torches everywhere, but having to make my entire house look like a Christmas tree was... well, I wasn't sure I ever understood the point of that feature.

Anyway, how do you people handle massive trees? I always clear trees out completely and then replant them, but the huge ones are such a pain I have to wonder if there's a better way.

Better stuff are more dangerous to get. Normally this would be a fine idea but the range that torches protect was small enough as it was.

Ah, but you'd be armed too. And, since you're working and participating, you'll get yourself an iron or diamond sword quickly. Meanwhile, some troll who wanders in might sick some rocks on a stick and try to hit people with it, but that's the limit of the intelegence I would expect them to show.

Yeah, when it was in, torches looked the same. I'm saying it would be a better approach to make them dimmer instead.

Got any blueprints to show?

I'm still working on them - turning complex, smooth 3D curves like those of the bow of cargo ship into complex, blocky 3D curves is a pain in the ass. I'll share them when I'm done, I promise.

I've been pillaring up and taking it out as I go, since that makes cleanup easier. I suppose doing your idea with sand, so it doesn't matter how tall the pillar is, might end up being easier. Building a second or third pillar to clear out foliage is annoying.

Build pillars out of wool, clear wood from forest, burn forest to ground.
All solved.
Also I have begun construction of the mega airship, so far I have the cargo hold and 4 crew cabins made, I have yet to do the mess hall, lounge, observation/passanger seating, first class rooms, cockpit and baloon or two, depending on if I do a twin baloon system or just 1 baloon.
so I'm 1.8/8 done.
Each cabin holds 2 people.
so 8 crew so far.
I'v decided on 12 crew plus captain.

EDIT:
12th night of construction, it's harder working at night.

SECOND EDIT:
Finished it, I'll upload the save and maybe a few pictures later.
