The halloween update server software is horribly unstable.  I would recommend not trying to host a server right now.
save-all, which you essentially need to run on a regular basis, causes the server software to stop responding for 15-30 seconds at a time.
It seems fine except stupid lagspikes due to a
comp/internet is shit.
but save-all seems to be fine for me. (except bit of lag due to the shit computer).
How big is the map?  Save time in seconds is equivalent to roughly (number of chunks) / 1000, on Jaycraft, at least.

OK we now have the ip stable at stonecity.no-ip.org , I managed to mess up the no-ip client so the address wasn't pointing to the right place.

Warning for all of you that haven't tried it yet.

Do not ride minecarts into the portals.  When I did it, I died instantly upon reloading and all my stuff landed in some random spot of the Nether that I still have yet to find.

Oh ho ho, but don't try to return the shoes, because they won't take them back once you've worn them.
Especially if that fat pig Tony is at the desk.

I still want someone to tes my "Two gates, one fire" idea. Perpendicular intersecting gates, with the intersection lit.

I have an epic idea. It requires shittons of materials and time, though, neither of which I have available.

Does not work.

You can light one from the non-intersecting side, but then the other won't light.
And you can't light them from the intersection.

On an entirely unrelated note, it is entirely possible to get reasonably close to where you want to be with a rough estimate of how far you need to go.

Divide distance in each cardinal direction by 8 and then go that way.  Simple enough.

I mined through ~100 meters of Nether to make this portal, and I was aiming for that canal.  Decent location, given the distance involved...

Yeah I tried it again later without any items with me and died in the same spot(could see all my items just sitting out there)

On that same note... Things can go horribly wrong with portals... For an example, in my world5 I have a strip mine a couple mountains away from my home base, in fact, it's so far I made a cart system.

So I figured it would be faster to walk the nether to go to my quarry, so I built a portal there... The thing is, when I enter that portal, I end up on the portal of the home base in the nether, so if I enter that portal again, I'm home...

Super fast mine->home travel.
