Anyone else notice that floating leaf blocks no longer seem to despawn on their own?

Notch broke that with the update.

Ah, ok. Thought it might be something like that but I seemed to have missed an official word on it while looking around.

It just means you need to make leaf mountain in The Nether with leaf rooms.  Then hope that when he does fix the leaves that you didn't spend a week solid on it.

These biomes can be strange at times... New world, no editing at all.

Using the old rules, there was a distance that leaves would start falling off.  They had to be (x) spaces from a wood block or they'd "fall off."  I was debating an experiment of placing several wooden blocks and placing leaves in abundance around them and waiting for them all to fall before counting the distance but I never got around to it.  I noticed this when I was making my "thick trees" and I would cut out the branches.  Leaves would start falling off at the edges and they created near round tops.

Is it me or Minecraft starts to get a horrible slowdown at random intervals? I experience it right now while in caverns.

It seems like the halloween update made it far more unstable than it was. I crash maybe three of five times I come back from hell.

The portals seem even stranger than I though. I decided to test whether or not building solid ground for a displaced portal would cause the first one to produce a properly aligned one. It did not, until a ghast fireball destroyed the hellside portal, and I leaped into the magma, then went through the original portal. It created a sideways portal on top of the cobblestone room I built for safety from ghasts. I reactivated the portal in the room, and it took me to the normal-space portal it had originally spawned. Going back through that dumped me at the other portal (which didn't spawn where I expected it to... apparently it's drawn from one particular corner, since that corner had the proper displacement, but the rest of the portal was aligned so as to be perpendicular to the other, and almost touching it to boot). Quite strange considering I'd assumed east/west portals would all face the same way in hell, and north/south ones the other.

The halloween update server software is horribly unstable.  I would recommend not trying to host a server right now.
save-all, which you essentially need to run on a regular basis, causes the server software to stop responding for 15-30 seconds at a time.

I'm curious how you determined east/west and north/south in the Nether.

He is saying that two north/south portals in real space should face the same way in Nether, which currently does not always happen.

The Nether may not run on direction as we know it, as evidenced by the wacked out compasses.

There is an implication that the cardinal directions are the same, considering the idea is "enter hell, walk 10 paces, build a new portal, emerge 80 blocks away in the direction you walked in". Further, you keep the same facing on going through a portal, so if you face north, step into a portal, and don't touch the mouse while warping, you'll be facing north in hell. If you enter a portal facing one of its open faces, and emerge staring at its frame, something's gone wrong (I've only had one portal fuck up like that, though; I broke it with the help of a ghast, died, then went back through the portal, and it spawned a new one that was properly aligned beside the dormant frame).
