Well, that was something. I just spent a moment making a care package at my spawnpoint where I also constructed a gate and a few chests full of goods and all.

After I collected my Nethventure kit, I jumped through the portal and discovered that my little torch-lit gateway I initially made to make it easy to find just roasted a ghast that was welcoming me from behind. Fortunately I was exiting an alternate gate I made near the other and avoided it's attack. As it was on fire, I shot an arrow or 2 as it was screaming in burning pain and it died in front of me on land. Collecting the corpse right now. My first ghast kill; and it as mostly by accident. Woo!

That's what you get for trying to get an attack from behind against me. :P

And regarding sailing magma seas, how would a minecart work as a boat instead? Would it work, since wooden boats would burn away?

Minecarts don't float. Just trust me on that one. *shudder*

Apperantly it dosn't like my portal.  I can enter it, but everytime I exit it puts me in another portal it apperantly decided to build nearby.  Oh well.

All that basically did was make me wanna build a lighthouse so I could find my way back from the portal that was genned on the surface.  And I did.

After doing that I decided to perform a more thorough expedition.  I barely escaped with my life.  I did manage to kill 2 1/2 ghasts though.  1 with a bow, and I killed one with a sword when it decided to float too close to the ground.  After that I apperantly pissed them off because more and more started showing up.  One more decided to float into a magmafall after I reflected some projectiles at it, and as more and more kept arriving I hightailed it back to my portal.

That platform I was fighting them on looked like a warzone.

Grieg, that is because the gate you made was in solid territory in Nether.

Also, this is so cool.

I have determined how to colonize the nether,However it requires obscene ammounts of obsidian to build a dome and plenty of light to keep gasts out of the dome, it also requires glass for observatorys and A LOT of iron for doors.
From there buildings can be constructed however wanted because the dome protects them.

You should all be ashamed of yourselves.  The obvious solution is to chain the baby up at the entrance as a kobold detector.

Well, despite digging a small cavern for me to fit a portal in (finished the one I evacuated after some zompigs curiously followed me inside), I got out in a nice mountainside in a snowy climate. I did the usual, constructed an olympic torch as a beacon of a gateway, and did some exploring.

I however came across a worldgen anomaly. I did nothing to this landscape besides a few dirt blocks to get out of the cavern below the ice.

EDIT:
Here's another shot. Seeing as I have to head back to the ironically safer Nether; that torch is a real help in locating the gate after some spelunking.

Was there suspended sand that fell perhaps?

Oh, and I can say that the filesize of the saves displayed on the save menu is now borked. I saw one of my save files had -.01mb when I loaded it last. So either it is displaying wrong or Notch managed to create a save file so efficient it actually puts more space on your hard drive.

It's borked. My World 5 consistently says it's 0.0mb.
Also, funfact, Ghasts can't break cobblestone.

Tnt is awesome.

Someone needs to make a castle defended by reloading cannons.

I am amused.

The amount of TNT required is ridiculous though.

After a bit of practice and tolerating the Nether's noises, it can actually be a fun place. I mean, I've learned that with a sufficient amount of arrows, and knowing where the ghasts are coming from, and keeping the oinkers at a distance to prevent accidentally hitting them, ghasts are easy to take down, and sometimes fun. I think I may be a bit of a sniper with the bow and arrow as well.

It IS however, much more plausible thanks to the fact Ghasts drop gunpowder, so you don't need to wait at night for creepers.

Do cannons consistently fire objects in the same arcs, if the object in same place? I'm thinking cannon travel. Being fired thousands of blocks and land in a 1*2 area of water.

Make those pumpkins Jack-'o-Lanterns, and take a screenie at night.
