Perhaps, but the portals look nowhere near as good that way.
They still do when you build them on a wall or a corridor.

Or the 12 iron it'd take to make the 4 buckets to hold 4 lava squares, if you're using the casting method of creating the portal.
Well, I'm the proud owner of world 1, my most developed world, which is nearly ironless. But I've already made a huge bridge in the nether that put me a loooooooooong way off the known world, so I have new hopes for iron.... And really ugly border chunks between the new generator and the old one... Like... Square cliffs...

I'm an idiot.
I grew a tree on the shoreline of that lava sea in the Nether.
Obviously it burned up.

You can build portals underwater.
It looks amazing, especially when you put some lightstone blocks around it.

What would happen if you built a quadruple portal square? Sor of like back to back portals, but cover the entrances with obsidian from the inside, then light one of the floor blocks.

1) Ghasts are huge
2) Why can't I have the pigmen's swords?
3) A castle, built entirely out of luminite. Make it happen.
4) Do ghast's drop anything? EDIT: Yes. They drop gunpowder.

Declaration: The sun is made of luminite; Luminite clusters in the Nether are the Nether's tiny suns.

EDIT: 5) Water cannot exist in the Nether?

5) Water cannot exist in the Nether?

It can exist, by hacking it in.

Can't be placed with buckets, though.

Even still, it's useless if you catch fire. Wiki says you can't put yourself out in the Nether by jumping into water.

Fine! Screw the water! Build a boat and sail the magma seas!

Although that is likely because of the lack of water.

Has anyone tried placing a water block surrounded by all dirt tiles?

Yes; result: hisss.
So much for casting gates in the Nether, and Netherfarms. Also, watch the fudge out for pigmen.

So I've not been messing with this very long, is there an easy way to cheat terribly and just spawn anything you like/need?

Reasonable people wouldn't try to colonize somewhere as unhospitible as the Nether. It's obvious that we are by no means reasonable people. Let the construction begin!
