If you don't want to mod, what you could do is make a couple of iron (or wood, but iron would look better) doors next to each other for the floodgate, and then use a redstone wire to link it to a switch.

I had tried doing the iron door thing already, that's how I thought it was done, but no luck, liquids don't seem to pass doors, open or otherwise.

Also as a side note I was really proud of my hardwood flooring in my base.  Then my magmamoat set it all on fire while I was crafting.  I burned to death.

You can always use reeds. Those can also allow for water elevators because you can walk through them, but water doesn't come out.

I've been hearing reports that coming back from the Nether can apparently glitch out and dump you in another save file. That's a pretty severe sounding glitch.

Or the 12 iron it'd take to make the 4 buckets to hold 4 lava squares, if you're using the casting method of creating the portal.

No corners gives a more rounded appearance. Hopefully, Notch will NOT change it to require corners; the cornerless version reminds me of the portals found in Quake 1.
