if minecarts and tracks could travel across portals, legal perpetual motion machines would be trivial to make!

The thing is, even sealed-up slipgates may still cause ghasts to spawn in normal space. I'd argue instead for only occasional, highly secure portals to be built.

I am curious how vertically close portals have to be. It'd be neat to have two very close real-world portals, one a hundred blocks higher than the other, leading to adjacent gates in slipspace.
Of course, security is in mind. I would advise something like a bunch of half-blocks lining the edges or something to prevent ghasts from getting close or something. Or for more security, just convert direct routes into pipelines with optional doors as a way in or out, but in airlock fashion for added security from the grounded guys. I wouldn't hurt to line the outsides with some obsidian however for protection.

I wonder if making obsidian foxholes would help at all?

In any case, just be sure to have plenty of a common material to at least hide yourself in/behind (wood is replenishable resource, but can burn up. So build quickly, and prevent any fire from going near them. A rock or dirt foundation could also work.).

Those early screenshots of "Hell" and the Ghasts from that PCGamer article didn't do justice to the scale of the area.  The first videos of walking around I was like FFFUUUUUUUUUUUCK...

I don't think I'll be building any slipgates very fast.  I like that slowing-mud though, useful stuff there.

Yeah, Notch didn't want to offend anyone by labeling it Hell.  Which is a bummer for that Christian Gamer site, but it's a fair point.  Instead, he gets to reference Quake (in name only, but oh well.)

Considering the game has an overworld where we start in, and by the context of how the other zone looks; I kinda like Underworld. It seems to fit in well, and it gets to the point.

It should be called Terra Pacis. Peaceful land, indeed.

Well, just two days left now, one in a few hours.

The Slip doesn't really flow as a name, in my opinion. Also, I really hope this guy's whole site is a joke.
Yes, objectiveministries is a joke site. Not that there aren't people crazy enough to say some of the stuff on it, but all of the authors are fictional, the whois data has no information identifying it as belonging to any organization, the overall tone is too silly (not just over the top, but silly in ways that someone who actually believed what they were writing wouldn't be), and no one's managed to find more information about anything it talks about, from what I managed to find with google last year, when a friend linked me to it.

Out of curiosity, how much obsidian have y'all stashed away?  I've only got 14 (exactly enough for one portal) right now, and it takes forever to mine.  I figure I want at least 28 so I can immediately have an entrance and exit point.

I have bucket, and magma. I can make hundreds of portals :P

I don't have even one block. Progress in the Ultracave is forthwith, but still very slow and nowhere near the magma flows yet.
