Mobs can climb ladders, but they're not smart enough to do so if you're not above the ladder, and at the proper angle for them to catch the ladder while walking towards you.


I've been trying to distract myself/prepare for the update on the map that has my cloudlevel highway, and the under-construction world-tree, complete with hole down to... well, a lava pool right over bedrock. Quite good luck for the lava to be dead center in the hole, too. The shaft was dug with dynamite when I got bored with mining and had exhausted all my legitimately-gained dynamite, so I just hacked in a few stacks and tore apart a mountain with it, including using it to bore a hole through the earth.

I started building a seafloor dome, but still can't get the aesthetics right, though I've gotten the procedure down pat. Assemble it on the surface with gravel, let it fall to the bottom, then cover that in glass. Airlocks require a bucket to assemble, usually, in order to counteract the flows by placing springs (since water doesn't flow into a spring on the same level).


Also, "The Slip" just sounds retarded. At least the blog post mentioning prospective names said he didn't really care for it either. The suggestion "tesseract" from the comments is better, if

I hope he doesn't call it tesseract, that's terrible. The Slip is at least relevant and descriptive.

Really why even give it a name? People will likely call it hell anyway.

Slipcraft or Slipspace (though not in space technically) are ways to improve it; but we ought to come up with some other names.

What was the Hell dimension used in the Doom/Quake games called? I know they used slipgates, but what about the dimension used?

Dimensional Underworld is already one name I could think of; or Under-Space. Nether-Realm could also work. We need ideas that are descriptive enough to describe it while naming it. We already know it's a cavern, it's dark, it's hellish, and traveling is compressed; sorta like Quasi-Space in Starcon 2. (Additional mob idea: Orz. Don't make them *frumple* and *dance*, otherwise you'll be one *sad puppy*.).

Despite all the speculation I've seen us throw around so far, I've yet to see someone ask-

What happens when you dig too deep in Hell/the Slip?

Or dig upwards?

It's entirely possible that if you dig too deep in the slip you'll either
1) inevitably reach lava or
2) reach something terrible like a bottomless pit ala the "normal world".

What happens when you dig up too far is a good question, though. Theoretically, with placement of blocks, ladders, etc - however you want - you should be able to reach the top, and dig from there.
Would you get back to the normal Minecraft world and essentially "unleash HFS"? Would you hit inconceivably solid stone that you couldn't dig through? Would you find something else entirely?

The new update is gonna be fun.

I'd bet digging up would result in reaching Bedrock, which would be hilarious. Digging down will lead to bad, bad things, I imagine.

Does anyone know if you have to click on the portal or does walking into it work?

I imagine building portals in front of portals for "safe porting":

Real:  -> P...............PP...............P ->

Hell:                      PPPP

Example: Walk in on the left, come out the first portal in "Hell" and be pushed into the second portal of "Hell", come out the Second portal in "Real" and be pushed into the Third... etc.

The only reason I can think of doing this would be for "safe" travel.  But it brings up a question.  Can portals be made next to each other like that?  I think it may conflict if you built to portals in the real world.  They would be in the same relative space in "Hell."

That guy is like people who try to read deep meaning in a random 4 line poem. Sure, you can find those meanings if you try hard enough, but that doesn't mean that the creator had anything like that in mind.

Already covered in the indie games preview. Two portals that are too close in real world will both attach to the same portal in the slip.

I think, depending on regions, if you end up in a nice flat part of the underworld with plenty of room, you can space them at least 4 tiles apart from each other to maximize distance and safety; alternatively, you can always try and make a skyway in the underworld, and have special zones made in the overworld to catch. I would advise you bring a bucket of water to make a safe landing zone upon entry from your new skygate. The underworld, you can have them close, but like my example shows, even 4 tiles of separation can allow significant distance of travel; but I would advise at minimum 16 tiles for maximum safe travel. My skygate would allow for a good overlook point, and the water bucket is a downward elevator for the initial exit (in which you build a way back up safely in and out of).

Remember, there's a bit of a crazy distance translation, so I  don't know if building gates higher will make them sky high or not. Build with caution.

The thing is, even sealed-up slipgates may still cause ghasts to spawn in normal space. I'd argue instead for only occasional, highly secure portals to be built.

I am curious how vertically close portals have to be. It'd be neat to have two very close real-world portals, one a hundred blocks higher than the other, leading to adjacent gates in slipspace.
