also, since slip-space is 16x shorter, it means that you can have a 16 tiles station in the normal world, with a portal at each end, and in slip space you just moved to the next tile.
It is like having pocket dimensions.

I noticed that at the end of The Slip video, the guy was walking on some muddy-looking hellblock that was slowing him down and messing with movement traction as the Ghasts shot at him. Hmm....

That muddy-looking hellblock is the one with the screaming faces on it.

This all looks awesome. Can't wait.

I suspect that all moving entities that enter a portal pass through. As such, if you have tracks that go right up to the edge of a portal, then the cart will skim right through, taking the critter riding it along.

As a side note, this means that activated TNT, if somehow lunged through a portal, might just go through.

It's also worth noting that the video is using the old Zombie Pigmen model, instead of the new non-gory one Notch chose to use.

So who will be the first to have a secure building designed around slipgate teleportation? Corridors with slipgates leading to full-sized rooms in 'real' space but only accessible through the gate in slipspace. :)

YAY! Since I finally found magma and further expanded my storehouse/workshop to hold water and magma, I now have an obsidian factory, with a diamond pick (thanks to 3 diamonds I found as well when magma hunting + reddust mining). I might be able to utilize a slipgate system in my world, provided it's compatible with the new system.

This is going to be a fun update.

As for face-blocks, why not bunny-hop across? Floor contact would be at a minimum, and you'll keep moving. You know, Quake-physics. Oh, and thanks to the flambéite (and how common it looks), I found me some scenic torch/lantern materials. Now, to figure out what that doom-gold is about. Why would it have a glass shatter for a mined out noise (could it be some sort of sulfur? Could it possibly be a natural explosively volatile material?)? As for utility with face-blocks I sense many creeper and mob traps can be made with this stuff. A good way to improve security.

A corridor of those would make a good killing field with a bow.

Just be sure to take advantage of your situation, and have a plenty quick way of getting the materials; like a wooden/stone walkway ladder-accessible (unless mobs can now climb those too) to the spot you killed the mob.

And somewhere else he's said it's only the player...

Here's his blog, which has a link to this PC Gamer early review, which has this video of The Slip in it. Now you know how it all works.

I dunno, portals don't seem to have a very seamless transition. You kind of gotta wait, and then you're placed in a different map, pretty much.

I doubt the portal warps anything but players.

As for the blocks with faces slowing you down.. I thought it seemed kinda non-sensical at first.

But if you assume the block is, to some extent alive then it could be like, the entities inside the block are grabbing at you or something.

Would be cool if there was a 'hands reaching out of block to grab you' effect. :3

It might just load the FIRST time. to build the terrain and such.

but i dunno.

Mobs can climb ladders, but they're not smart enough to do so if you're not above the ladder, and at the proper angle for them to catch the ladder while walking towards you.

I've been trying to distract myself/prepare for the update on the map that has my cloudlevel highway, and the under-construction world-tree, complete with hole down to... well, a lava pool right over bedrock. Quite good luck for the lava to be dead center in the hole, too. The shaft was dug with dynamite when I got bored with mining and had exhausted all my legitimately-gained dynamite, so I just hacked in a few stacks and tore apart a mountain with it, including using it to bore a hole through the earth.

I started building a seafloor dome, but still can't get the aesthetics right, though I've gotten the procedure down pat. Assemble it on the surface with gravel, let it fall to the bottom, then cover that in glass. Airlocks require a bucket to assemble, usually, in order to counteract the flows by placing springs (since water doesn't flow into a spring on the same level).

Also, "The Slip" just sounds retarded. At least the blog post mentioning prospective names said he didn't really care for it either. The suggestion "tesseract" from the comments is better, if
