Hurry up, the infinite torches won't last for long!

Eh, not a big deal. He just needs to give himself a chest with a few stacks of torches in it to turn to lanterns at the update. And with that much coal, this should be trivial.

Hmmm....if certain biomes don't have trees I wonder if the game will be set up to avoid spawning players there. It'd be pretty difficult to start off on a new world with absolutely no way to make any tools unless you walk a good distance.

Slimes will only spawn in the bottom 15 z-levels, regardless of light. Most of which is covered in bedrock or stone.

Slimes do not exist.
They do. They only spawn in the bottom 15z's, and they have a bug in the code which causes them to spawn using x,y co-ordinates, instead of the x,z co-ords everything else uses. Makes them even harder to spawn.

I just had a Fridge Horror moment. The Halloween update will make it so monster spawns deeper down will become more resistant to light. I've been using torches as ecomomically as possible in the Ultracave due to its size. The Ultracave is right near the bottom of the map.

Hmmm.

I suggest peppering the cave with safehouses. Rooms with doors cut into the sides of the cave that are riddled with torches. Include at least one chest (probably a double) and maybe a workbench and smelter as well. As you explore and mine, dump off resources into the safehouses on a regular basis. Then you can periodically do a safehouse resource run where you pick up resources from the safehouses and move them out to your main base.

Hmm...with the new changes, making ladders up to a higher (safer) level for quick transit might be a good idea. With a compass you could probably make the upper areas a criss-cross of safe tunnels all leading towards your main base pretty easily.

Safehouses should be stocked with food and lumber if possible. At the very least, I'd have a full set of stone equipment in there so that if you do run out or die you've got something to work with next time you get that far into the cave.

I started doing this after the first major cave I explored. I got killed partway in and lost about 30 iron (more than I'd dug up at all prior to this) as well as some iron equipment. It was a painful lesson in caution, and it's going to be even worse with the update.

We need turrets. Or force fields.

Something that'll allow us to secure deep areas.

You mean glass and medieval fortifications. Really, that's the best we got right now. (Though it's pretty cool, I've gotta do a stone medieval castle soon)

Won't you want to get a new map? You'll have to in order to get the new biomes and I bet that the hell dimension won't work well on older maps, seeing as it didn't exist then...

Slimes do not exist.

I have never seen them. The only reason I even know slime balls exists is because I can hack them in.

Even on the multiplayer server, with all the space in the world for them to spawn, no slimes appeared when mobs were enabled.

Slimes are the steeds of herobrine, but they don't exist.

AND THE TORCHES WILL BE CHANGED TO LANTERNS. STOP WORRYING. AND LOVE THE BOMB.
I have seen slimes once. When they were first added in, they inhabited a tiny cave right next to the surface. Unfortunetly, I didn't realize how rare they were, and killed them off. I have never seen slimes since.

I hope we can resize portals to let Ghasts in. I have a boring old world that needs some Fun.

Something I've read said the portals spawn them. It's probably impossible to tell whether it's speculation or not, though.
