My plan would, of course, involve dynamite to blow up a rock floor supporting the sand or gravel. Since TNT can't destroy obsidian, and you presumamby have at least a bit of it if you built the gate, then you could line the sand-dropping chutes with obsidian to keep them from being damaged.

So, you set off the charges and down comes the sand. Actually, what I might do is make the whole ceiling of the gate room be collapsing sand, so that it would suffocate any already-present invaders, allowing me to keep the supplies they contain.

Really, all you have to do is imagine the portal is a trade depot, and it all just comes together.

Torches hold up sand placed above torches but not sand falling on torches.  Water deconstructs torches.

No, no. They'll be replaced. With permanent lanterns.

Only new torches will expire.

You see, a good security system would be to have the portal, or hell-gate, built in a heavily fortified, deep underground chamber, with tubes on the top for dropping activated TNT down. You definitely don't want your TNT to be exposed.

Ideally, you could activate the TNT remotely, from a button in the gate room (as well as any observation rooms adjacent to that), so that in the case of a swarm attack, the entire stock of TNT could be fired. Of course, you'd also want to have some way of rapidly casting a protective barrier around the gate, possibly a wall of sand or gravel that can be dropped down so close to gate that no threat, could fully appear in the space between the portal surface and the barrier, effectively "splatting" the incoming attackers.
"Incoming Ghast!"
"Quick, close the Iris!"
"Nothing can get through that."
Twenty thuds later
"Well that should hold th- OH GOD THEY ARE HEATING UP THE IRIS!"
Iris failure in 6 hours.

Before that really happens, have plenty of magma and water on hand to put obsidian around it.

while iron (or better) is a finite resource requiring much more work to find.
lolwut

EVERYTHING in the game in infinite. You just have to generate more of the world. Infinite world, dude.

Before that really happens, have plenty of magma and water on hand to put obsidian around it.
From what I understand, you need to make a fire in the middle of the frame to make a portal. Is it known if water puts out said fire?

Aren't you guys missing the obvious solution here?

Ghasts are 4x4x4 monsters. Don't leave any 4x4x4 areas within range (whatever the spawning range happens to be - !!SCIENCE!! time!) of your portal, and they can't spawn.

(Although the dynamite seal certainly sounds like more fun.  :D )

This is, of course, implying there won't be mods. Doesn't Runecraft have a hidden door rune, which can be used with preconstructed walls? Obsidian wall, door rune. Portal room sealed when not in use, open when you need to get in and out.

I've been exploring more of the titanic cavern system I stumbled upon, now dubbed the Ultracave. It is fucking creepy. The place is so large I haven't even explored the whole thing, and is filled to the brim with minerals of all types (and I mean all, the place is a diamond ore stockpile.). Problem is, there are just as many monsters as there are minerals. The only hostile mob that has yet to spawn in the inky darkness of the Ultracave is the Slimes, who I've still yet to encounter. They'll be down there somewhere, I'm sure. Even after expending hundreds of torches lighting the place up, I don't think I've made even half of it safe. To give you an idea of how this has been going, I've mounted about twenty delves into the Ultracave. I returned alive two times out of that, and those alone let me double my iron and coal stockpiles. I have to mine that place out. I'll be set for life.

Slimes do not exist.

I have never seen them. The only reason I even know slime balls exists is because I can hack them in.

Even on the multiplayer server, with all the space in the world for them to spawn, no slimes appeared when mobs were enabled.

Slimes are the steeds of herobrine, but they don't exist.

AND THE TORCHES WILL BE CHANGED TO LANTERNS. STOP WORRYING. AND LOVE THE BOMB.
