You cannot produce magma through the water reproduction trick. However, you just need enough to get into hell. Then you have more lava than you could ever need.
Ah, ok. I kind of forgot about the whole lava-all-over-the-place thing.

The moment the lever was pulled, somebody's pet kitten stepped onto the bridge. I read somewhere that if a cat falls more than 11 stories, it instinctively flares its legs out to increase air resistance. This slows it down enough to stick the landing with relatively minor injuries. In Dwarf Fortress, apparently, cats don't do that.

What makes ghasts hilarious to me is that when Notch was initially making them, they weren't fireproof.  Talk about a tenuous existence - a fire-breathing flying squid that happens to be flammable.

But if they do blow chunks out of the landscape, suicide mining becomes a viable option for fast Hell-digging!

Kinda reminiscent of a bug with dragons.

They gonna blow up our houses though. Which is quite cool.

As far as casting obsidian in hell, just cast it in the real world and carry it in.

I was thinking that it'd be cool to carry in some glass and build a "safe" observation tunnel, but seeing how they destroy blocks, that becomes a non-starter... wonder if they also destroy obsidian.

For mining obsidian, if it's on a server with Runecraft 2.1 or newer, there's a pickaxe which solifies magma next to what it mines.

You could try making a curtain of water over the glass. It stops fire and explosions, so it might work in this situation.

Infinitely burning rock, that'll be nice to use instead of having to resort to the wood glitch for massive torches.

Only in the DF forums would the third post after a preview of the Hell dimension consider mining stone from Hell and transporting it back to manufacture large-scale perma-flaming torches:P

Since I built my first on a snowy map on the planehacked server I've not felt at home without them. It's what a miss now that we have servers without fire.

For mining obsidian, if it's on a server with Runecraft 2.1 or newer, there's a pickaxe which solifies magma next to what it mines.
You still have to spend the 16.4 second timer mining out the obsidian block, though, regardless of how you solidify the magma in the first place, unless you cast it in the position that you need it.
If you need it as an item, you're hosed.

A single water source tile can solidify an unlimited amount of magma.  That's hardly an issue.
It's what a miss now that we have servers without fire.
I just don't understand this.

Fire in general causes obscene amounts of processing power usage, which is why it's disabled so often.  Even the single ever-burning logs do this, although it is rarely noticeable in single-player.
And those aren't even as visible as dropping a single block of lava on top of a single-block tower.
It might look prettier, but...

Would anyone mind if I made topic specifically for Minecraft maps? I'm doing one that will have a Dwarf Fortress, Human Port, and Elven Forest Retreat (all wood, it wouldn't be fun to burn down then).

As it turns out, the pen was in fact a poor choice for melee combat in comparison to the sword.
So I just started playing this game and I accidentally nuked the moon.

I find your project interesting. Partly because I am doing a similar thing with an human castle, dwarven mines and an elves forest retreat ( built in trees). Unluckily, I mostly abandoned the project, but maybe it can live again after the next update.

edit: also, I think a thread to collect interesting maps would be nice. go ahead and start it!

I haven't seen anyone on my Skylands server in almost two weeks. I think I'll be shutting it down for good soon. If anyone is interested, I can probably upload the map file so you can continue on in singelplayer.

I wonder how Hell will work with floating areas, doesn't he plan on having floating biomes?
