Infinitely burning rock, that'll be nice to use instead of having to resort to the wood glitch for massive torches.

This looks really good. I happen to have, by chance, booked holiday for the week following the release.

Exactly what I was thinking.

Only in the DF forums would the third post after a preview of the Hell dimension consider mining stone from Hell and transporting it back to manufacture large-scale perma-flaming torches:P

Making the portals will be interesting, though. 8 blocks of obsidian won't be easy to come by - IIRC it takes diamond picks to mine, so either you'll need diamond tools, or you'll need one heck of an accurate mold and quite a few buckets. Making another gate to exit Hell will be far more fun:D

Weeelll, you could just bring eight more obsidian blocks with you...

I wonder what gold gates would do. Hmmm... You know, if you build your base IN hellperspace, then you could have the doorway link to the normal world and thus have a room sixteentimes larger inside than outside!

The article says a second portal is made in hell, so no fears of being trapped down there. Unless somebody on the surface destroys the portal as you are down there.

Oh shit.
Fire-spitting flying mobs?
Yeah, those will be annoying.
Here's hoping they can be saddled, ridden, and controlled. And then brought back to the 'real' world.
And that was the first response.

Is it weird that I consider them completely normal responses?

On that note an infinitely burning torch was my first idea when it was said that it would keep burning.
The flying mobs could be used to make burning roads in hell without any cost.

Ring 5 is done. Work is temporarily halted while I mine the sensitive and finicky Gorge. This will take one, maybe two days. Not to worry, folks. Others tried it before, and the got it all wrong, so I'd rather do this myself.

Obsidian is insanely easy to create and mine... it just takes time.  Create a 1x1x1 hole... dump a pale of lava in it... dump water on that... viola.

Out of curiosity I know you can make new water source blocks if you set up your adjacent blocks right, but can you do the same for magma? Or would obsidian production mainly just change a hunt for obsidian into a hunt for magma?

The moment the lever was pulled, somebody's pet kitten stepped onto the bridge. I read somewhere that if a cat falls more than 11 stories, it instinctively flares its legs out to increase air resistance. This slows it down enough to stick the landing with relatively minor injuries. In Dwarf Fortress, apparently, cats don't do that.

You cannot produce magma through the water reproduction trick. However, you just need enough to get into hell. Then you have more lava than you could ever need.

Casting purple stuff is quite easy. What you do is lay a magma source tile, then put a water source tile in it.

True, true. I was more thinking that using it for fast transportation would be difficult (enter Hell, hike 1/16th of the distance you want to travel, build portal to leave), although I guess you could get around that by just making both portals in the real world.

Quantities of magma for casting shouldn't be a problem, given the images of Hell we've seen thus far.   ;D I doubt you want to be trying to cast a portal while Ghasts are circling overhead, though, which is more why I commented that casting might not be too easy.
