The single-packet ping that fsock uses is able to make it to the server, allowing the ONLINE status, but the sustained connections aren't.

In other questions, do skeletons ever run out of arrows? I had one shoot probably two dozen at me before it decided to stop dicking around and jump on top of my little cave (presumably to wait until I left) instead of loitering around in front of it. Cacti keeps 'em out, but it's still a while before the sun comes up...

Hey, don't be mean to the creepers... They were humans too once. Humans who over the course of the apocolypse which rendered all other humans undead (zombies and skeletons) were warped and twisted into their current form. Their face was smashed flat, their eyes gouged out, and holes carved where once stood their mouths, and their arms were repurposed as a second pair of legs. They took up explosives to kill both themselves and you, thus sparing you both from further torment (as the player will inevitably fall to the same evil forces who warped them so horribly).

Side note: Notch should add a multiplayer mode in which players can play as creepers.

That sucks. Btw, Jay. Have PHP actually open the port on the server and connect to check if it's up. You can also made a lil .txt file to make sure it only checks like every 5 minutes, to not spam the server.
