Good luck, buddy. 90% of public players are whiny kids, 5% of them have half a brain, 3% of them are normal, and 2% of them are actually smart. Those statistics apply to these forums, by the way.

This man is smart.

Finally got the game and have been playing around. One problem I run into is getting lost regularly. I went out to kill some cows and pigs and ended up just building a new base around a big tree. How do you mark where you have been or something?

Also, any hints on finding Iron? I built a cool castle on the side of a huge cliff  (went basically from sea level to clouds, straight drop) but didn't hit any iron at all until I was well below sea level. Is this normal? I mined the crap out of that area.

How do you guys build bridges? I built a massive bridge between my sky castle and another piece of land far away but I fell to my death so many times. I finally tried building little pillars to climb up but ran into the same problem again. I eventaully finished the bridge but it was so histarically ugly I just gave up on the map.

Looking forward to the B12 server.

1. Usually you can mark areas you've been with torches, that's what I do.

2. The easiest way to find ore is to go cave exploring, big caves will have lots of exposed veins.

3. There's really no easy way to build bridges, just be very very careful.

I'd like to remind everyone that half of the time I don't even know what I'm talking about. The other half of the time I only sort of know what I'm talking about.

Build something really tall so you can see it from a distance, although draw fog is your enemy there.  Otherwise, learn to recognize landmarks, and build yourself big markers and paths if you need to.

Yeah, you pretty much have to be around or below sea level, that's where the iron spawns.  No real trick to finding it, except digging a lot of exploratory mines (I favor curving staircases myself) and natural caves.

Practice and patience.  Temporary scaffolding, especially sand towers, are also good for working on hard to reach areas; just tear them down when you're done.  The "cliffhanger" trick of standing just far enough over to click on the side of the block you're standing on is always part of this, but one second of lag or control wonkiness can kill you.

Just a note on Cliffhanging: if you put a block to your back:

Code: [Select]
BBBB..
XXXX..
XXXCT.
BBBB..
T is target open space, . is open space, B is wall, X is floor, C is you on floor

and make yourself look a little to the side and back up, you will slowly move towards T. The furthur to the side you look, the faster and less controlled. Makes it far more predicatable, though a little slower. It kinda beats falling to your death if the bridge is high enough.

I never tried, but I think the safest way would be to just fill the area with sand, and then remove it all after you finish the job. an extension of the sand towers, but very expensive.

edit: also, livestream going up

About getting lost:
I use a map generator to gen a map of the area then mark it in paint.net or paint with important areas and markings to signifie where every thing is.
before that I made a small tower and covered it with torches or a magma glass case as beacons to show the way.

You should all be ashamed of yourselves.  The obvious solution is to chain the baby up at the entrance as a kobold detector.

A good way to mark key locations is to build an arrow in the sky, pointing down at your base or mine or what have you. Easily visible from a distance.

I know it's unrealistic, but I can't help but imagine little bearded babies for dwarves. In my mind, they come out of the womb fully bearded. That's how the mother carries them around, too, she just drags them around by the beard or ties it to her belt. When the father's on duty, he just ties their beards together and the baby just kind of hangs there, swinging to and fro with Urist McDaddy's movements.

I just use a lavafall, like Jay. It glows. It's red. It's tall.

Lavafalls are easy and quick to build tho. You just make a dirt tower, throw a bucket down one side and then quickly erase the dirt while the lava falls after you. Gotta be a lil ninja on that stage, but you can build a small side ramp to make sure you wont be lavafried.

or you can just have a pool of water at the bottom so that the fall won't harm you. all it would require is a bucket of water.

Make sure it's two deep.
I learned that lesson the hard way.

Except they burn out fast.
I'v figured out that if you use a tree trunk and not a wood block it lasts a lot longer.
I had a whole burning tree last for like 2 days.
