*sigh* The internet does have a few morons out there, doesn't it?

In an open letter to those protesters (who will never read this, but I'm too lazy to post on the Minecraft forums): There appear to be a lot of players who want pure vanilla servers. Rest assured, if there's a large number of players who want them, there will also be a large number of server owners who want them. If you find a non-vanilla server, you leave.

It's no different from any other online, server-based game. If you find a TF2 server and find out that "vanilla TF2" actually meant "32 player insta-respawn dice mod!!!", then you disconnect from (and blacklist) the server. Minecraft will be no different, and trying to force it otherwise is an exercise in futility.

The minecraft forums certainly are depressing. Jay, you are the only person in this thread I don't want to hit

I know it's unrealistic, but I can't help but imagine little bearded babies for dwarves. In my mind, they come out of the womb fully bearded. That's how the mother carries them around, too, she just drags them around by the beard or ties it to her belt. When the father's on duty, he just ties their beards together and the baby just kind of hangs there, swinging to and fro with Urist McDaddy's movements.

Sorry to say Jay, but I've asked him in the IRC..
So unless you give him some large of money [This came up as a joke, he wasn't making a serious proposition], then there will be no Dragons.
He's said so himself.

I don't remember exactly why, but it was some hypocritical reason like, "They're too cliche". "Skeletons, Zombies and Spiders".
But yeah.

Jay however isn't wrong when stating that this traces back to notch's times at wurm online.
It should be noted that dragons were actually added evenually to wurm online, but I don't know if both of them agreed on it.

90% likely of being irrelevant however. If notch said there won't be dragons, there won't be dragons in the enar future, most likely. Unless he puts them in a friday update.

Dragon's aren't coming soon, but it doesn't necessarily mean other megabeasts are.

And wow... that thread...

I guess when you make a game simple and fun, idiots and illiterates get drawn in as well.

The fuck are you talking about? No one in that thread suggested removing op commands. In fact, most of the anti-modded-server opinions amounted to "let us filter them out of the search", and the rest speculated about modded in adminium spawn jails (why would you need adminium, by the way, when you could just set down a land claim flag and have a door openable with a lever or button outside?) and servers with ranks that remove abilities from lower level players, along with speculation that admins could be modded to be allowed to randomly spawn magma springs to grief people. Not one suggested removing the ability to kick/ban people.

There were scarcely any intelligent comments in the thread, yours not among them (though neither were those of the people you were flaming, if that's any consolation).

Greifing will be harder in SMP but I imagine sand suffocatrion will be the most common way.
Sand suffocation seems unlikely, because it requires an anchor block above someone who's standing still for you to suffocate them. It would be far easier to set them on fire and hit them with a sword, which would be better known as pvp, since you could do the same to them.

Honestly, I'd hope land claim flags are a server option and can be disabled, because otherwise it just takes a lot of the fun out. Sure, I don't want someone smashing my shit, but if I don't have to worry about it, there's no excitement to the game, and it's all just carebear bullshit and the same breed of vain, paranoid masturbation that creative can turn into.

The minecraft forums certainly are depressing.
Yes.

Uh, yeah, you missed the point when I said what I said about Wurm.
Which isn't really your fault, I didn't explain it.
He said, in direct quote, "There will never be dragons".  And yet, they implemented dragons.

Beyond that...
That is nearly exactly the same reasoning that was used when it was came up in the context of Wurm.
So it sounds to me like he's poking fun at himself.
We shall see.

If I were notch I'd IP ban about 90% of the minecraft forums.
I would call it: Idiot/griefer cull 2010.

To some extent you are correct here. I did focus a bit too much on an issue that really only one user was bringing up. And while nobody specifically suggested removing the ability to kick/ban people, there was a suggestion that the ability to teleport and placement of Adminium should be taken away. Adminium to some extent is a useful block to use for stuff like a spawn platform, so nobody can make a pit under the spawn, although I see why people would want it removed for game balance.
I did overreact, but there was something to be angry at in there. It was just a lot more limited that I first saw.

Edit: This Post may have also gotten me a little hot-blooded, despite being somewhat unrelated to the issue at hand.

Ironically, that's one of the few comments I could respect in that thread. :P

It reminds me of the cutthroat ideals of EVE, which I miss, and curse my internets for being too slow to patch. D:
