I have to try that. A world in ruins is a world of fun.
Probably best not to get rid of the rock entirely.  It's way too crash-prone to be fun.
Try replacing it with sand.

I've had the idea to paste some huge screw-off holes into a survival map and then try to live in on the rocky faces over the bottomless pit of doom. Sounds like good times. And if it someday becomes a possibility, paste the space map I had before into a survival map. Good times ahead indeed. Now I just need to find relevant programs.

I do kinda wish the new Survival had the old Survival Alpha's map options, like floating islands.  Those would be barrels of fun with all the new stuff Survival has now.

Course, editing maps like that is flawed by design unless you happen to spawn on an island that fits in the initial generation area.
In which case, you're screwed:

But what exactly is the goal, Jay? This sounds like fun, but what am I attempting to really do?

EDIT: There is diamond in those there hills! This map is INSANE!

I know it's unrealistic, but I can't help but imagine little bearded babies for dwarves. In my mind, they come out of the womb fully bearded. That's how the mother carries them around, too, she just drags them around by the beard or ties it to her belt. When the father's on duty, he just ties their beards together and the baby just kind of hangs there, swinging to and fro with Urist McDaddy's movements.

There's no goal.  Just have fun with my hell map.
Or don't.  Whatever.  Share your results if you want.

...I forgot to set the respawn point, so if you die, you're not on that little island anymore.
Course, you also won't have the sapling or the dirt, and there's nothing of either left anywhere (except outside the currently generated area) so...

The pressures of hell compressed gravel into diamond (I know, it's ridiculous..  work with me here)

What program did you use for that? I really should know this being a moderator over there, but I should be able to be lazy! My authority demands it!

But yeah, I know there are inventory changers but was unaware of map programs that worked in Survival.

This map is cruel. You only get one dirt, so you can only get so much wood so often. Other reasources are found in almost ridiclious supply, yet the one that used to be so very common, is now precious.

It is designed to torment you.

NBT forge works with Alpha/infdev. However I believe he used MineEdit for it's global block replacing abillities.

When I tried making a hell map I just removed the leaves from the trees and replaced the sea with magma. I've since considered changing the trunks to coal next time. How did you get around the magma not giving of light?

It's a trap.

It is, actually. In my quest to get over there, I took an (Accidental) swim in the lava.

In this case, I didn't.
Place a torch in the same general area and it should fix itself, though.
It's a trap.
Actually, it's a cactus.
They can't grow on coal ore, so I made them something a bit different.
The fact that there happened to be one right on the other shore there was a coincidence.
A list of changes.

Originally, I had planned to make gold ore into dirt, so it wasn't completely impossible to get, but it got swept under the rug by a future dirt -> rock change (whoops).

I created a small hellish map.
http://filesmelt.com/dl/World2123456789101112131415161718192021222324.rar

Don't ask about the link length, I have no idea what the hell is up with that.
Gravel to diamond.
Grass to gravel.
dirt to rock.
Water to lave (still)
Tree to coal ore.
And a lot others, can't quite remember it all.

Just tried to start my own minecraft livestream.
I don't have all the wonders of jay's map, but I am confident time will spawn an interesting map.

I noticed an inability of having the streamed window as inactive, which means I can't both play and watch.
I'll have to wait till somebody joins to see if it works unfortunately. :(
