Also, I've found that powered minecarts have some serious problems pushing me in a cart up a straight slope.

Needs to go like this

But for the sake of realism I came up with the idea that you can't build railways anywhere, only on top of cobblestone.
So this'd make two big demands on economies(hah, I've spent way to much thinking about this) in villages.
1. for the need of a lot of picks, unless you can consitantly fashion diamond ones.
2. the excessive need of stone for bridges.
This is my current idea for train stations.

You assume that requiring stone foundations would be enough of a hindrance to generate an economy of mining.  I submit that a fuckhuge pile of spare cobblestone would be the natural byproduct of all the iron needed to make any useful amount of track and minecarts.  Six iron bars per 64 track segments (which doesn't cover much ground really) and five bars per cart adds up to shitloads of mining already, if my paucity of iron is anything to judge by.  Remember that in multiplayer, you won't have Cartograph to cheat to way to veins and stuff.

Thats a good point, but even then you're going to require one cobblestone per section of track, and bridges will have to be build in kinda realistic ways (so, 2 by X amount, and I'd quite happily build bridges across the biggest canyon I could find

Also, I don't use the cartographer to mine. Its much more fun that way :D

Edit: Found an interesting bug. If you have your graphics turned down to Fast, instead of Fancy, tree leaves become solids and you can place things on them. And when you switch it back to fancy they remain there.

Cartograph? For finding IRON?

That's pretty desperate.

I know it's unrealistic, but I can't help but imagine little bearded babies for dwarves. In my mind, they come out of the womb fully bearded. That's how the mother carries them around, too, she just drags them around by the beard or ties it to her belt. When the father's on duty, he just ties their beards together and the baby just kind of hangs there, swinging to and fro with Urist McDaddy's movements.

I figured it was what all the cool kids were doing, since everyone seems to have so much more awesome stuff than me.  Honestly, it baffles the crap out of me.

Point is, it won't be there.  Except for maybe the server player, but that would really be cheating.

When multiplayer is out fully, i say we have an experiment. Attempt to fashion an actual working enconmy of sorts, rather than just everyone doing everything.

Given that most of us only understand the science of economics through the lens of Dwarf Fortress, I predict those two things will turn out to be the same thing.

Not to mention that in a world where there's only like two dozen resources and anyone can build everything with no consideration of skill, any sort of economics will come down to "how many thousands of units of cobblestone will you take for one diamond?".

Never mind that, assuming you have a 32-bit OS with access to ~3GB of RAM (4GB, minus what Windows reserves for addressing space), you should be able to support roughly ~60 players at a time.
There's also an issue with 32-bit addresses that whittles that number down to 2GB (for one application) and 40 players.

Quote from: Notchblog
Next week:

Tuesday or Wednesday: A first, very rough, version of Survival Multiplayer
Thursday: I leave for BIGJam in Berlin, a weekend of meeting other indie game developers and making games.
There won’t be a seecret Friday update next week, because of this.

August 10: I return from Berlin!

August 11-13: Patching up multiplayer bugs, doing a small Friday update

This guy has the worse sense of timing.  Step 1: Release big awesome thing that everyone wants, in horribly unpolished form.  Step 2: Go on long-ass European vacation.  Step 3: Ten minutes of fixing incredibly obvious bugs when I get back.  At least he isn't going on vacation for three months, like with the original Survival release.
