I got in for all of three minutes. Crafting worked, block destruction worked, water appeared to have physics, lights are a-go, other people can be seen, stuff.

I don't care how broken it all is, it needs to go public.

Look, the guy is making a massive game, virtually by himself, and has so far, assured virtually perfect quality continuously. Aside from a few small and understandable glitches, the game has worked perfectly every time he's released it. I trust his judgment on when it's ready for him to release. Besides, Tahin and I need more time to get the kinks out of, and the ram into, the server.

I have over 4 GB free at just about any time.  You do the math.

E: The multiplayer currently has a portal glitch.
A chunk fails to load, making a hole, so if you jump down, the server doesn't realize it and resets you to the top, but the client still thinks you're falling, so you fall even faster, and it just repeats forever.
He needs to implement a chunk-load failsafe to get around it, I think

Our server has one gig of ram currently. We're researching the kind of memory chunks we need, and we'll probably get four gigs. If we can get it to work, we may try putting a hunded-gigabyte SSD hard drive in there and make it all a paging file. Bwahahahaha.

Paging files are nowhere near as quick as actual RAM.
You might be able to support hundreds of players, but would it be PLAYABLE?
I doubt it.
I'll stick with my cap of about 80.  That's way more then I could ever possibly hope to get on at once with my connection anyway.

E: Make sure your server's on 64-bit architecture.
If it's not, you can't use more than 3.25GB of whatever RAM you get, and I think there's a limit at 2 GB per application.
Course, that's on Windows.  It *might* be a resolved issue on a *nix system.  I have no idea, have yet to run Linux on a system that it would actually make a difference on.

We are stuck with a 32-bit system- I got the server for free, and it's about ten years old. That's annother neat thing about the paging file, assuming that that will let us break the limit.
 
Either way, we are looking to get three more ram gigs in there anyway.
 
Anyway, our larger problem will probably be bandwidth. So far, our maximum player count has probably been about nine, without serious lag. I think that around twenty we'll start to see some problems, so perhaps this gig will be all we can use.

When it comes to what RAM is used for, there is no equal.
SSDs and flash drives can both be used as decent paging files, but it is still slower.

...I'm thinking you'll be more limited by the processor than either the RAM or the bandwidth, most likely, if it's a 10-year-old computer.
Have you tried running the actual game on it?  That would give you a pretty good indication of where you stand in that regard...

It's a pure linux console. We've been using creative partly as a test of how it can handle serving, but it's true we simply won't know how well it handles survival until we acutally run the server- since we don't have a GUI on the server, we can't run the client on it. I expect it to go very well, though we may be forced to throttle it down slightly, perhaps from 15 to ten chunks or 20 to ten players. Either of those changes would give us a lot of performance without much loss in terms of gameplay.

Just to make sure, Notch has said that MPS servers can be password protected, right?  I don't want to see any server stuffed to capacity or chugging like Hell because some dillweeds left a bunch of bots laying around or forum raids or something.

I'm pretty sure passwords have been mentioned.  I can't remember though.

We can make it private, and we can also just set the maximimum players nice and low.
