I think the water is acting as a sort of cushion. will test this shortly.

EDIT: Testing shows that the presence of water prevents the cannon from blowing up. Theory: Water acts as cushion for explosives, preventing them from effecting the surrounding environment

Further testing reveals that water dampens the damage done to rocks dirt and sand, but does not effect damage done to creatures.

Yeah, the explosive blocks it in a 1-tile channel of water, which contains the block-destroying aspect of the explosion, but not the loose-object-pushing aspect.  (It also bunches up the explosives toward the objective.)  That's why the wall covered in water is immune to explosives as well, even when the blocks land in the water.

This is of course a wacky and egregiously wrong system that turns real physics upside-down, but it makes for a great game mechanic, so I hope Notch leaves it exactly as is.  Knowing his sense of humor, he probably will.

Next up: Cannon powered transit system for our SMP server.

Protip, the guy in the test movies could have used 2 or 4 not gates to add a time delay to the payload, instead of having to prime it himself.

I was messing around with cannons until the early hours yesterday/today. Mostly working on one to launch people over walls. I had success but uploading this tinny clip of it to youtube is taking forever.

You need more than 2 - 4, try 10+ or at least that's the kind of delay that worked for me.

Thanks to Tahin and PTTG for the bay12 server. I built some stone mob heads:

a home for myself, plus a road joining it to the nearest settlement.

I can see somebody setting up a fancy not gate time delay system into a defensive cannon.  For a "portable" cannon though it would take more time then it would be worth.

I can see some awesome power with complex timers and mechanisms and stuff defending however.  One guy singlehandedly firing off 10 or 20 cannons rapidfire like.  Mix those up with some prepped arrow launchers and you have a minecraft equivalent wave motion gun that one guy could fire off with the single press of a button that turns everything in a particular direction into a arrow peppered crater.  Add a couple guys and it can be reloaded in a reasonable period of time too.  I would certainly avoid attacking such a defense.

Is it just me or are cannons a tiiiiiny bit too unwieldy for actual vanilla SMP use? Since it takes many, many shots to get one good hit, during which whoever you are shooting could just come down and take his time kicking your ass and messing with your cannon, it would take far too much TNT, and any tiny failure on the cannon operator's part leads to the whole cannon blowing up? (though that last part sounds pretty realistic AND dwarfy at the same time XD )

I could imagine cannons being used in specially designed multiplayer maps/gamemodes though. Just not vanilla SMP.

I think what we'll see is that they are almost never used, but when they ARE used, it will be awesome. Just like in real life.

You can make a very slow clock on the bottom of your fort and use it for the bomb signals. I've been trying to replicate some real life logic circuits in the game, it's pretty fun.

I wonder if you can build a multiplexer so you can send several signals through a single line.

I could imagine cannons being used in specially designed multiplayer maps/gamemodes though. Just not vanilla SMP.
But it surely could be fun if lets say. You have a pre-made map with 2 forts, then you make 2 teams and each team gets like 10 tnt blocks and no weapons, their job is to get to the middle of the fort and destroy a golden block or something, first team to do that wins.

After it's done, just reload the map, play again until bored.

For any kind of 'attack' situation... I doubt cannons would be used. It's way easier to just tunnel under/through a wall - remember, you're using 3+ TNT per shot, you're assuming you'll hit the wall (instead of falling short or flying over the top), you're assuming the hole will be low enough to the ground that you can actually reach it, and you're assuming you can repeatedly land shots in the exact same place to tunnel through a deep wall. That's a lot of assumptions to be making.  :P

OTOH, defenders might be able to use TNT handily. You can spend all the time you need setting up a cannon to cover an area. The attackers won't have nice stone walls to absorb incoming barrages, and the whole issue of 'accuracy' is remedied with a proper shotgun-spread of explosives. Imagine a cannon that lobs 3 TNT blocks in a spread pattern - you'd take out a pretty large section of terrain, along with any attackers in the area. Or a cannon that saturates an area with 5+ TNT blocks.  :)

With lots of time to build and aim the cannon, plus the fact that you're aiming for squishy dirt and equally-squishy people instead of solid walls, I see cannons as terrifying (and potentially even effective!) defensive tools.
