I have a huge treefort, with lava running down the edges.
It's not on fire.
I don't know how.

It's funny, I haven't seen any slime, nor any papyrus yet. I've just gotten clay, and that's in a new world.

I'v found that it grows in swampy areas.
I'v found enough for two books so far, it's taken a lot of traveling the ocean too.
My world is either swamps or rolling valleys and mountains.

Hey Toony, how did you get that little slim into your house?  Did you have to lure all the way up out of the underground?

I've finally finished my skyscraper fort. And because I get lost easily, I made it a lighthouse. Really creative, I know.

Goes up to the top.

You know, you can plant it on dirt tiles next to water.
You soon have more than you can ever use once you realize that.

I built myself a reed farm.

The most efficient method I've found uses the same pattern as supporting grates in DF.

It was a lot easier to post it on the Minecraft forums, looks better on there too.

That's a bit of a waste with all that water. Water makes ground humid on a 3 tiles radius so there's no need for that. Even if reed needs water closer (I've seen it growing 2 tiles from water, but not 3 yet) you can still do better with something like:

RRWRRRRWRRRRWRR
RRWRRRRWRRRRWRR
RRWRRRRWRRRRWRR
RRWRRRRWRRRRWRR
RRWRRRRWRRRRWRR
RRWRRRRWRRRRWRR

And so on while being lazy, because you can cut a lot of the water spots out.

Except that you can't place it unless it's got water adjacent in one of the cardinal directions. As I said, it's just like the rules for supporting grates in DF. edit: I'd imagine the stuff you saw growing was just the world gen being weird, like the floating sand in some ways.

Seems pretty pointless to farm it, unless you just like to have the stuff.

I got all excited when I found some, and started planting it all over my nearby water source. Once I'd worked up a decent amount, it went something like "OMG I can't wait to use all this to make.. um.. um.. *Checks wiki.* ... absolutely nothing worthwhile."

...

However, I look forward to swampy biomes with abundant reeds for aesthetics. Also, I suppose they could be used to hide stuff. Ninja entrance hidden in bamboo!

I've been building swamps today, I'll have to get some pictures up when I have them looking how I want.

Aha. Then the world gen was being weird as usual
They can spawn not touching water, but they won't do anything.
Like sand, they're "frozen" and don't look at their surroundings immediately.

Aha. Then the world gen was being weird as usual. I should have considered that, since I saw a floating tree in the very same world.

My world 1 has no reed. :(

Or ocean.
