And Notch's 'fix' has broken my game... I can't even move except for the first few seconds when it loads an area.

Just a correction, the six blocks of stone (or wood if you prefer) create four blocks of stairs.  You are losing stone, but not as much.  I like them myself, because you don't have to mash the spacebar and get motion sickness to climb them.
Really? When I tried (before the last friday update) It only gave one block of stairs. I guess I will try again.

Somethings messed up. I am seeing absolutely NO mobs underground. And only a scattered few above.
