Also I'm new here, so quick question: does this forum have a dedicated Minecraft server or anything? And/or is someone planning on making one for Survival Singleplayer?

Animals only spawning on grass is the best idea ever, and I was actually thinking of suggesting something like that on the forum.  Everybody, myself included, complains about their houses being packed with pigs and sheep due to the new spawning system - my idea was that they would only spawn on "natural" tiles (dirt, sand, gravel, stone, trees) and not "constructed" tiles (cobblestone, wood, etc).  This is a little more limited, but since grass makes up 80%+ of land, that works just fine.

I find it a little amusing that putting three wood blocks in a U arrangement yields four bowls, and five wood blocks in similar arrangement makes a boat.  And that they generate sticks when broken.  Well, they have one great use - spending the night out at sea, so you're protected from monsters.  Unless they land on you.

a shame none of my oceans are big enough to create a proper stranded scenario.

You right-click on water to place it, then right-click on the boat.  Exactly like every other object in the game (except levers and doors and buttons).

I'm sure the exploding-on-land part is just a temporary bug, of the boat's code wigging out when it tries to float on ground.  Larger stuff is great and all, but I bet it runs into all kinds of collision detection issues, since moving entities basically occupy one point in space.  Not to mention the mountain of headaches that would likely arise in making any kind of moving object, like a large ship, that a person could then move around on.

But hey, Notch is a clever guy.

Minecarts aren't useless if you're willing to exploit a bug that allows for perpetual motion.
Look up "Minecraft boosters" on Youtube.

I don't think that would even be possible, considering that a Minecraft world isn't flat. Well, I guess it would be possible, but it would require one heck of a huge amount of sea!

Edit: Also, boats allow you to climb waterfalls easily. ...or, at least, in theory they would. In actuality, because they are the flimsiest things known to man and can't be picked up, the waterfall really needs to be away from any land (aka: by editing it carefully) and good luck trying to get a system where the boat returns to the bottom!

Other way around.
The Minecraft world is flat, but the real world is not.
As for not being able to see the other land...
As for the actual issue...
You just need a landmass that is more than your draw distance away.

Depending on what your view distance is set to.
-(yeah, ninja, I know)-

Regarding land claims, what happens if someone decides to surround your land with a ten-foot wall, then claim that? Though, I think generally they are a good idea, they need to be worked out quite a bit. Maybe limit the number that can be placed dependent on the number of players. Or allowing the number/possibility to be set by the person running the server?

The easy to make minecart boosters can't be made anymore. and the others that I've seen aren't worth it.

I know it's unrealistic, but I can't help but imagine little bearded babies for dwarves. In my mind, they come out of the womb fully bearded. That's how the mother carries them around, too, she just drags them around by the beard or ties it to her belt. When the father's on duty, he just ties their beards together and the baby just kind of hangs there, swinging to and fro with Urist McDaddy's movements.
