OH A CAVERN WITH WATER! Let's go against the flow of water to go to the top. Eww, too long. Oh crap. I'm lost.

I keep meaning to build the biggest possible minecart jump. Start at the top, then 45 degrees straight into the heart of the landscape, possibly open to the surface for prefrence, down to a single up-angle immediately afterwords, and see how far I can fly.

I wish there where railplates, so that passing a cart over a segment of rail would trip a wire. Since that could be used to trip junctions, you could build a set of tracks that would form complex repeating loops.

That's annother thing that's needed, is cart boosters like in that gif with the windmill.

I've found that you can get a lot of valuable ores by digging straight down to the bedrock and then spreading out.

What I've got to try one of these times is to make a second surface at the bedrock layer.

Probably complete with water- and magma-falls from the surface.

So many megaprojects, so little time.

I hate to burst your bubble, but carts travel pretty much straight down when they go off a ramp. I'm so sorry.

Well, coal can be found significantly above sea-level, so just look for an exposed vein to start with. Once you have torches, go spelunking. You will end up with more coal than you went in with, by far, if the cave is even of just average size.

Usually after finding my first coal, i just make a nice minimal small dirt cave home. Then I go spelunking. the second I get enough stone for a full set of tools, I get rid of my wooden ones and never look back. Caves make it easy to find exposed veins.

This would have been good advice a week ago.  Now, this man is trying to kill you.  I went spelunking in a cave barely below the dirt strata with full iron armor, a diamond sword, and a half-dozen pork slabs, and I barely escaped with my life after lighting up maybe a hundred yards of natural tunnel.  Skeletons ga-fucking-lore.

Okay, I also lit myself on fire and survived by the skin of my teeth my scarfing down fresh pork, but it was still due to the general atmosphere of danger.  Point is, it's now vastly safer to dig your own mining tunnels and keep them well lit.  If you break into an open chamber, plant a few torches.  If you hear any xylophone noises, block it up and never look back.

You you can do it the Janet way and run in there and dodge everything in pitch blackness and push the skeletons into pits.

I found a schweet cave system to spelunk down. The skeletons are definitely dangerous, but it's worth it. It's got hub connected to hub connected to hub with water and magmafalls everywhere, pathways looping over pathways, magma rivers, pits, you name it.

I'm finding music from X3 to be the perfect ambiance for spelunking. Then again, X3 is just occupying a very large chunk of my interest right now, so that may be the reason why.

On an unrelated note, I wish snowballs would fly further before vanishing. It's so jarring to see a snowball hurtle through the sky and vanish just as it starts to fall downwards.

Sounds awesome; the majority of the caves I find all seem to be rather small and/or linear... :(

Any screens/footage of your epic spelunking adventure?

The Janet Way is suicide.  Suicide, I say.  Although now that I actually have a steady source of feathers, arrow duels are not infeasible anymore.

The best method I came up with was digging a trench to a long drop between my work area and a large cave room I couldn't enter without being shot.  The problem is, it effectively sealed off that direction from further mining, due to the monster riot building up in my trench and skeletons emerging in the darkness.  Fun to watch them start attacking each other though.

Notch was showing off a preview of what he has working for MP in a stream earlier.
By playing with himself (no double entendres here).
The other clients are as-yet invisible, as are mobs, and getting killed crashes the server.
It looked like placing blocks isn't quite functional yet either.
Water and lava flows appear to be working correctly, though.

Progress!

What's Notch's steam?
a stream earlier
It wasn't his stream.
And he ain't there anymore.

E: They've got a recap thread over on the forums.
Can't say how valid some of it is.
I especially can't say the "confirms" are actually confirmations.

It was 4chan's brocraft stream.
Not sure why you want a URL so badly...
Likely won't be Notch again for quite some time, if ever.

Simple, but effective.
Probably shouldn't be pixel accurate like that one, though.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Someone explain this to me. Also, I died. I wanted some metal behind that lavafall...and I sort of got set on fire. I was trying to get to the middle, when I died by lava. Damnit. How do I find the castle I was working on?

You are...amazing.

I cannot even leave my big house with a nice roller coaster and water fountain. The first spider I saw made me jump. Never...leaving...castle...
I keep seeing things that aren't there..I am going insane.

This game manages to creep me out very much so. Even on peaceful mode I twitch at eve-OH GOD A ZOMBIE! AH LAVA! HELP A PIG! Oh wait, pig. Yum.
