Wait... rain?  What?

Do you mean that bug thing where every water tile would suddenly start doing that splash effect, or was there actually rainy weather at one point?

Taz means the third person splash effect. And this is the update that got rid of it.  I have NO clue what Vertigon is talking about.

I know it's unrealistic, but I can't help but imagine little bearded babies for dwarves. In my mind, they come out of the womb fully bearded. That's how the mother carries them around, too, she just drags them around by the beard or ties it to her belt. When the father's on duty, he just ties their beards together and the baby just kind of hangs there, swinging to and fro with Urist McDaddy's movements.

F5 back in indev time would create a rain particle effect (similar to the snow one we have now) and those splashes.
When he changed it to the third-person mode, it still kept the rain splashes.
Now it doesn't have those.

I knew that. I guess it was just a failure of communication. Taz said rain but meant the splash effect. Vertigon read it as rain and not as splash effect.

I'm not convinced that snowballs do no damage.  I pelted a pig with like a dozen of them, then it only took one sword swing to kill it.

I love that they sound like they're being hired out of an air cannon too, from the leftover bow sound.  Fitting.

I threw at least 40 snowballs at a sheep, I'm pretty sure they do no damage.

Minecraft Alpha 1.0.5

+ Added snowballs. You can throw them, but they deal no damage
+ Added craftable snow blocks
* Fixed building on snow bug
* Fixed ice rendering bug
* Signs no longer require a free block above them when placing them
* The game no longer saves the level when it crashes. Saving on crashes sometimes broke save files, and that’s not good.

Work on Multiplayer is going really well, and it’s actually starting to get fun. I implemented a fancy mapping between players and level chunks today. It automatically sends terrain data as players move, and keep track of exactly what players are in range of what chunks, for efficient broadcasting.
I will also use it to buffer block changes within chunks to send them as a single compound command, saving a whole bunch of bandwidth.

And there’s now a replaceRegion(int x, int y, int z, byte xSize, byte ySize, byte zSize, byte[] gzipCompressedData) command. The only limitation is that y and ySize both have to be even, but it can be used to quickly send large level updates, and it’s implemented almost directly into the Level class itself, so it can be used to load/replace arbitrary regions of the map. It will probably be quite useful for server mods such as area backups or for resetting the arena between levels in a Spleef mod.

[edit:]

And now snow shouldn’t fall through glass anymore.

They're handy for shearing sheep at a distance, though.

If you'd ever have a need for such a thing. They work well for knocking Creepers and things backwards off cliffs, too.

Minecraft: The only game where, instead of shearing sheep, you punch the goddamn wool off. Or, in this case, snowball it off.

(Do sheep take damage from the punch that shears them? If so, snowballs might actually have a use if you can keep some sheep in a pen without them despawning...)

So sheep regrow wool after a while?

And we can keep an underground sheep farm? (enterable by a big hole in the ground, for the sheep to fall in).

AWESOME!

They disappear if they don't get light for a while.
They disappear if you leave.

So, yes, you can keep them in a pen, but it's very limited and it will limit you as well.

The only mob you can really have a 24/7 farm of are pigs, though, since you can't actually get mob spawner cages anymore, you'd have to INVedit/Mineedit/NBTedit one in.

They'd be different pigs every time you left the area though.

Sheep don't regrow wool in the Alpha version, though in the free-for-all survival test they can eat grass and then regrow wool.

But Quinnr, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Yeah, snowballs are fun. As are snow forts, though they take some effort to build.

I just realized, Ice makes the best wall material; if the enemy digs through it into your compound, they'll get washed away by the water current!

Hmmm... I wonder what explosions do to ice.

It breaks into its composite spring tiles.
Interesting note while testing:
I was unable to get spring blocks to freeze at all, I had to manually edit in ice blocks to make something to test it with :|
