The general slowness and lighting issues are pretty much the same problem. All you need to do is open the map, hit Esc, and wait for however long it takes to finish calculating the lighting for the whole map. I've had this a lot messing around with map editors and the tree generating scripts.

Hey, can anyone hep me? I'm trying to mine some iron ore, and when I use my wooden pick on it I manage to break it eventually, but there is no ore for me to pick up. Same with diamonds and redstone.

Iron needs a rock pick, and gold and diamonds and redstone need iron picks. Redstone may need a diamond pick, I dunno, having never seen the stuff.

 Redstone can be mined with an Iron pick, but it takes the longest of any ore.
