Here's a simple system to follow, one block of tree trunk on the wall/floor/ceiling, and then one block of plank right next to the trunk in the direction of the exit.

There's plenty of soil and gravel underground so you might as well make arrows with that stuff. Wood is far too useful when you start running low on torches.

That's the exact problem with using that as your icons, wood is much more identifiable while underground.
 Since wood is a renewable resource, there is no reason not to use that. Besides, arrows take iron.

That's another thing I do, except I dig them into the floor.  Sometimes I find whole new caverns below that way.

Yeah, the idea of mine is you need much less space to place these, I've found a arrow can take more space than is ideal.

Long story short, I mined straight into a magma lake. And got stuck under my ladder, so I couldn't escape.

Someone earlier had that issue and logged out and back in and then died. 

Oh by the by: can you see cavern systems from down there by looking up?

From what I saw (I died immediately and didn't get to look long) It's just the bottom of the tiles, rendered normally.  Can't see anything but a flat plain of adminium and a few scattered spots of stone.

Ok photobucket is down and I'm new to hosting with Picasa so this may not work but:



This should be/is my furnace room.  Any ideas on how to finish it up?  It seems very incomplete but really, I made it larger than it need be and there's not a whole lot you actually need in the room, so as you can see there's an entire section that's unused.

you could put a couple chests there, one for ore and the other one for coal maybe thats what I would do.

EDIT: or make a cobblestone factory there

How do you guys think death should be handeled in SMP?
