Speaking of diamonds.. I honestly think that diamond tools/armor should last a LOT longer. I mean they're great as they are, but (especially in the case of a diamond pick) they're just sort of.. things that I hate using. Every tick of durability that vanishes makes me cringe. If you're very lucky then you'll be getting 1-3 diamonds within any given day of constant mining. Not a game day mind you, but a 24 hour day (this is a rough estimation, I did get very lucky once and found 7 diamonds in a single day). And that's only if you find a VERY deep and natural cavern system.  I suppose you could strip mine, but that would be even harder on your resources/time.

So a diamond pick will not really last you that long if you're a miner or a builder, and a diamond shovel will not last very long if you are building on say, a mountain. Perhaps broken diamond tools/armor should return one or two diamonds? Just a thought.

I say the game needs encumbrance.  Wurm online did it quite well despite many of the game's other failings and Notch was a dev for that.  I was a miner.  Raw ore was heavy.  So heavy that even with relatively high strength, I could only carry about 10 or 20 full units of raw ore max. And after about half that my movement speed was slowed to almost a crawl. And that's when I left all my unrelated equipment at home.  The smelted metal however weighed 1/10th the weight of the ore.

If you wanted to do a lot of ore mining you either had to bring a cart with you, which halved your speed just by virtue of having it with you, but wouldn't effect your speed otherwise no matter how much was in your cart.  Or build a smelter near your ore.

Having large amounts of coal or ore in your inventory slow you down (and maybe even prevent jumping altogether) should nicely give a use to having a good minecart system.  While still allowing you to stack a large amount of something for feeding into a forge.  Just as long as you aren't planning on moving anywhere while you do.

If we're considering alternate inventory solutions, why not look to our favourite old Dwarf Fortress for suggestions?

In DF, you can carry one piece of ore/stone at a time. Since you can't carry 10 cubic meters of stone in your pockets, you just leave everything on the ground (where it never vanishes), and let haulers deal with the refuse later.

So, why not try a similar system? Perhaps one ore at a time might be overkill, but maybe give players a carrying capacity of 5 units of building material at once. In exchange, items never vanish if left on the ground. Once you've dug a mine, you'd use a mine cart (or massive amounts of semi-slave labour  ;) ) to actually haul everything out of the depths.

It's funny you should say that, as Notch has said at times that Minecraft is going to eventually be his vision of what Wurm should have been if the tiles were 1 m^3 cubes instead of 4 m^2 squares.

Raw ore in Wurm is 20kg an item, you could carry 10-20?

was your strength 80? holy shit, I needed an almost empty inventory to carry 100kg (5) of iron ore with almost 26 strength

EAGLE:

From what I know, only diamond tools actually let you 'harvest' the spawner once its been smashed up, fists don't, and neither do any tools ive used (iron and stone)

I have 34 strength and I can carry 12 of them..

Yep, server is down.
Notch broke it.
Will be sorted out later today, hopefully.

What? Are you sure iron and stone tools didnt leave a spawner? I've harvested 2 already with rock picks!

Speaking of which, do spawners come in different 'flavors'? One of the ones I got was spawning zombies, and the other skeletons. But I'm not sure if when I build them back they'd still spawn the same type. And after all the trouble I went through to actually get past the monsters to break them, I dont feel like building them to test that just yet :P

Depends on the lighting and the difficulty, I believe.

Somebody on the forums had them spawning skeletons, anyway.

Incoming stair blocks and possibly coral blocks (with fish particles around them).

Also,
free version = Minecraft Classic
Infdev = Minecraft

All according to the new post.

So, the stair blocks aren't in this one but an upcoming one right?

There's step blocks, not sure if that's the same thing though.

3 rock blocks in a row will give you 3 step blocks.

Has anyone noticed a decrease in the amount of caverns since the last update?  I can't seem to find a good cavern system for the life of me, just pockets of air pretty much.  Had some grand ones in the last level, which was genned before the update.  Could just be unlucky though.

This happens to me constantly. I'll find a decent spot, dig way down into the ground, and most of the time find absolutely nothing. However I have begun to notice that large cavern systems are  usually located beneath crazy looking terrain. You know, the big curvy spires and giant hills with holes in them and such.
