I've genned a new world, which popped out much more interesting than my last.  Been poking around in the cavern system I found by digging down for, oooh about 6 hours cumulative.  This damn thing never ends!  At one point I thought it had ended but there was this one tiny 1x1 tile of darkness.  I shoved a torch down there and it illuminated a huge hub with several branches.  Those branches branched into more hubs and so on.  There's also some tall waterfalls that give me access to several other stories of tunnels to explore and I've found 5 different ways to the surface.  It's just ridiculously huge.  I've stopped exploring it for the time being because I was going mad.

'Lost' doesn't even begin to describe how I feel in those caverns.  Will probably just dig down from my original staging ground (I have about 4 of them now...) and try to hit a deeper cavern system that has diamonds (hopefully) as this one has none.

Someone was asking before, can't be bothered to go find who, or when, but they asked if you could indeed harvest obsidian with a diamond pick, and place it somewhere else. The answer is..

steel

You mean iron. Steel is a much more complex metal to manufacture. As a Dwarf Fortress player you should know this from experience  :P

Yes, I know its officially iron, but it looks like steel, so that's what I call it.

Don't ask why I call those blue gems diamonds. =p

Build a giant lighthouse. With magma.
It's really easy to see at night, and really easy to make (just make a really tall pillar and have the lava go off it into a 1X1 hole).

True, but at a certain velocity the resulting explosion expels invader-bits at fatal speeds. You don't want to be dropping trogdolyte-shaped shrapnel bombs into your boneworks.
Only in Dwarf Fortress...

Thats a good idea. I can see a surface lava spring on the preview. Maybe I should make some buckets and head there!
