I have no idea how I managed to survive a night without lights.  My strategy was to build a really small shack out of wool, like 2x2, 3 tiles off the ground, and stood with my back to the wall and sword ready to chop shit all night long.  Worked pretty well, except for the skeletons jumping outside the window.  The best strategy is to run around like mad until you find an exposed coal vein, then make some wooden picks, then live in the cave you hollow out.

Now the big problem is the same lingering day/night issue, that creepers and spiders don't burn up in daylight.

Okay I started a new game and found coal more or less straight away :)

On another note, what's everyone up to in their InDev games?

I started a new map since the re-addition of mobs, and yes the first night or two are mad rushes for coal. After that though it's not too bad. With the new trees you can get even more wood than you'll ever need. If you don't find coal try building a furnace and smelting some of the stone you've dug out in your search. It will provide light inside your shelter and each ingredient (wood and stone) are in significant abundance. Beyond that it's the same as before, just keep digging and searching where you can, coal tends to be not too far down and Infdev tends to have it in greater numbers for each cluster as well.

Is there a point playing Infdev? I was under the impression it had no crafting etc?

Wow I just started playing this again and I must say, it's about 25 times more fun than it was when this thread started. They've done so much with it.

I have a few questions. Does anybody know how much further the developer(s) is/are planning to take this game? How often do they release content updates, and are there any major additions coming any time soon? Finally, is there a blog or something where I can find the answers to these questions myself?

---

I just started an indev game last night and I haven't stopped playing. The first thing I did was establish myself in my wooden hut. I added wooden battlements at the top to prevent myself from falling off/enemies jumping onto the walls from cliffs, and I added a staircase leading up to it from the inside.

Then I added a small extension to my cabin and used it's space to create a staircase leading down into my soon-to-be mine. I started digging around for a while and barricaded off all of the "unsafe zones", or the natural caverns that I had accidentally opened. I found a small underground river and promptly made it look fancy, then I dug some more and soon had a fairly good amount of resources.
At this point all of my gear was iron. I had forested my surrounding area and was even experimenting with wheat, however I found that craft to be unrewarding. Bread is nice but pork is faster, yeah? At night I would either barricade my home and work in the mines, or I would go out monster hunting with my iron sword. Fun!

Eventually I carved out an underground waystation complete with a chest, craft table, and furnace. I opened up the dangerous areas of the mine and unearthed a few lava pits, a few gold clusters, and even some gems; enough gems to create a sword and a pick axe with. I just recently dug a moat around my cabin for some reason and now I'm looking for other things to do.

Hope they add more. This was pretty fun.

Multiplayer survival mode, crafting, randomly generated infinity sized worlds, well, as large as your hard drive can handle, think the max was 100,000 terabytes. (=p) 1.5x the size of EARTH, if you can make a computer strong enough to have, well, 100,000 terabytes.

http://notch.tumblr.com/ Thats his blog. He's working on beta now, has been for a while, so not many updates until its done, which should be soon.

Network of USB hubs and giant external hard drives. Create a computer that can store more information than god could.

Hosting!

If you want OP, just ask. I've genned us up a nice mountains map. If I can get another generator to work, I'll get us some awesome undergroundness too.

EDIT: If people come, I might host for a while from around 10:00PM to 2:00AM for a while.

And server back down. If people want me to host a few nights, I can, and I can send the maps over too. Just say your interest in the thread. I'm downloading a game tonight...but I'll bring it back up if someone asks.

So what is a grue, what does it look like and what kind of damage will it do to you? I read that it can spawn on dark tiles IE unlit mine sections, but I've never actually seen one. Even in my bigger mines with unlit branches, the worst I've gotten was a skeleton in a subterranean lake and one of those exploding bastards sneaking up on me while I was mining gold.
