Uh.  Did you even look at the actual map we were talking about?
Randomized orange/grey pixels.
Last I checked, BEDROCK is not ORANGE.

the map ignores bedrock? That seems like a much better theory to me. Patch notes said it takes the top layer of the nether, so either Notch ignored the bedrock to give it color, or programmed that orange and black pattern just to make the map look nicer, because I don't think the nether has black and orange blocks in that pattern.

Maybe there are little pockets of lava in the top of the bedrock to make those huge lavafalls. But then you would be able to climb up and out through those so I don't think that's it.

Or, y'know, either way it doesn't matter, because maps in the Nether are FUCKING USELESS either way, because compasses are also FUCKING USELESS in the Nether.
